I just recently got a new geforce2 mx video card for x-mas (upgrading from a Riva128zx). My system is a P2-400, 128 ram, 7200rpm HD. My problem is that Diablo II refuses to run even remotely smooth in both DirectDraw and Direct3D mode. I have a fresh install of Win98 and have the latest detonator drivers (6.31) All my other games run a lot faster than before, but for some reason D2 runs a lot slower...any help on getting this to run faster would be really appreciated! Thanks!

Hmmm ... is this only in multiplayer games or even in single player games? Because in multiplayer, internet lag can also slow you down, not just the graphics card.

If you also experience this in single player, then it may be the inherent game lag that Diablo II has. What other programs do you have running while playing D2? Sometimes programs that continually access the hard drive will also cause your game to skip, stutter or slow down.

Have you tried Blizzard's suggestions? Since it is not possible to link directly to answers in their support page, let me attach a text file where I pasted what was written there. You can click on it on the right, or you can right-click on it and save it to your hard drive for offline viewing.

Read it and see if it helps. If not, post back with more details.

I actually have good news! Out of desperation, i decided to run the vidtest program again, and chose direct3d (i previously tried direct3d and then directdraw afterwards, both with horrendous results), and low and behold the game actually ran smoothly! Both in single player and multiplayer...and I still have no idea why that program would have something to do with how the game runs. Didn't change anything else, just ran the program...pretty weird huh?

Thanks anyways though,
Eric

Ahh, good news indeed. The video test probably had to be run twice to "break in" your new video card.

In any case, we're glad you have it working, and congratulations.
