View Full Version : If you suddenly got a million dollars - what would you buy?

Canis Lupus

Okay, here is something new - a situational poll ;)

If by some godly twist of luck, you suddenly get your hands on a million dollars ($USD, of course), either through an inheritance, a lucky lotto number, a big bag of money in the middle of the street or maybe you just plain robbed a bank (you bastard), what ever are you going to do with it? What are you going to buy? Where are you gonna be using it for?

Here are some logical choices ... since different people have different ways of wasting away their fortune (hehe), I have conveniently added the "Other" option ...

So close your eyes, dream of all that moola, and click away, you rich person you...

The first thing I would buy is the car I have always wanted. Beyond that, I would buy a house, setup a huge gaming room full of PC's networked, and then Donate money to OTS.

all of the above :smoke: hehhe, i would probably buy a computer, then i would help my parents pay bills for stuff they want, like to finish with the payments on the house, and buy a new car, the rest would go for me to buy my own stuff :dork: , but id invest it and make more money to :D

Hookers and cocaine! Oh, wait, no... buy a house... preferably somewhere close to the ocean in a nice warm climate.. pay off my car loan... hmm.

I'd definately quit my current job, though.

If I Had $1000000
I'd buy you a monkey (haven't you always wanted a monkey?)

Sorry couldn't resist the Barenaked Ladies plug. :D

I would probably pay off my current debt and house. The invest a lot of it, so I can retire when I'm like 40-50. Probably put some away to pay for my kids college.

A million today isn't much. Not something to say "i quit my job and retire early".

I would bank it and invest in government bonds and other sure money investment options.

Shalome
08-21-2002, 07:24 AM
In addition to buying a house and paying off the car, I'd invest most of it (at least in a long term CD or something). And Chako, when I said I'd quit my current job, I meant that i'd quit this job and find something more personally fulfilling to do if I didn't have to worry so much about money.

Like teach. :)

Or at least stop living in a 2 person household where neither person likes their job, but you're both afraid of losing your job, so you both keep lucrative jobs that neither of you are happy with just for stability's sake.

I'd buy a condo, a nice car, and pay off all my loans. After that, I'd have nothing to spend my paychecks on... and I'd have a lot of money to burn. :D

Well, first thing I would do is take out a contract on the dancing banana!

Buy a new home, not too big. Put some away for college for my son, and clear up some bills. The rest put away in a bank. Still work but maybe retire early. ;)

i would pay the rest of what i owe on my house, cars, and credit cards and then put the rest of it in the bank to gain interest. i would definitely consider retiring much earlier than i would without the money.

Darky!
08-22-2002, 02:38 AM
I'd stick it in a bank and live off the interest. you can live quite well on 100,000$USD a year.

tkron
08-22-2002, 06:12 AM
Hate to bust your bubble but you cannot earn 10% interest a year anymore in the U.S. at least. You might get 4 or 5 percent but that is tops. but still 40k to 50k a year is a liveable amount.

I would use it all to buy Blizzard stocks..then right after Blizzard announces their sales have gone up 500% from World of WarCraft I'm gonna sell it all and get about 200% profit :D

Sarc
08-22-2002, 10:54 AM
I'd put a lot into the car I got right now.
Either that or say the hell with it and buy a Porsche GT2 and spend the rest on insurance... ... for a year! Those limey bastards! :grr:

It's funny how far money doesn't go.

Currently, with 2,198 registered users on OTS, if someone where to win a mill, and distribute it evenly to all members, we'd each get a whopping $454.95. :eyes:

The_Turks(ff7)
08-22-2002, 01:51 PM
thats still more money then you started with so dont complain.
if someone won a million dollars, why th hell would they distribute it evenly?
God knows i would keep it.
Anyways i would by a really good computer and have the best stuff use that RAID and the best possible video card, ups, that sub woofer(or whatever the hell its called), and all that computer goodness. Then i would put the money in the bank, collect interest and sit back and relax. I wouldnt quit my job (if i had one), because even 1 mil wont last that long.

Just think of the kick-ass LAN parties you could have if you bought all your friends shiny new computers. :D At your fancy new fully networked house, of course....

Hambones
08-25-2002, 12:28 PM
Well, first of all...I've already got millions! Oh wait...I'm awake now.

I would take the whole mil and make money with it for about ten years. Then, I would build a summer house in Destin, Florida. It would probably be some kind of castle layout. I've always wanted to be able to say, "...And in the west wing..." Then, since I would be rediculously rich, I would network the entire house and have the highest technology that was out computer-wise in each room of the house. For instance, you could take a dump and be on battle.net at the same time, or have a lan party while taken a bath...capiche? Yep, that would do it for me.

I would put it all in the Bank and have it gain interest.

In 2years I would use the money to pay for college, and give some money to my parents.

I doubt I'll have anything left after that, but if I do:

The PC I've been wanting to buy for like the last YEAR
XBox with a crapload of games
PS2 with certain games that my friend doesn't have

I got a friend that has about $250k in school loans. Myself it was only $11k due to community college for the first 2 years and my scholarships.

A million dollars isn't that much in today's world! I would put it in the bank and doing some planning, invest it, and spend it slowly. After I put it in the bank, I'd probably buy a sweet computer or two and a sportscar. Then I'd go from there. :D

well, actually, i would invest about 80% of it and blow the rest on computer stuff. :) (but a chrome plated canoe would be tight!)

First off... You guys saying you would buy high end computers..that's crazy..computer parts are cheap enough to buy if you worked a 6.50/hr job.. well maybe with overtime..

Anyhow..I'd put it all into my company...and turn around and make 3million the following year?? Maybe?? lol.

Then i'd buy a $875,000 dollar home in the middle of no where on a 100 acre lot. One room would be a "datacenter" Consisting of my racks, servers, apcs,,etc. I'd have wireless monitors and speakers in each room of the house. A rotatating turn table in my living room with a "tricked out" 72 Chevy Nova on it. Surrounded by recess lights. My climate controlled four car garage would consist of 2 schools, a range rover, a porshe 911 , a Yamaha raptor 650R, a jet ski and a yamaha 1100 :) The center of my home's roof would be built as a heli pad and helicopter. On top of my house would also be a 50 caliper heat sensing fully automatic machine gun turret which would be activated upon tripping a 'danger zone' in my front yard when armed.

I would still work though..I just wouldn't take no bullshyt from anyone.

I'd find people whom treated me like shyt in the pass that are currently unemployed. Give them a job and treat them like shyt. lol

Then i'd pay to have people I didn't like ...killed.. Like... fuq with me..I make a call and have your a$z cancelled like the Dave Chappel show lol but within the hour.

Then I'd become this "Mr. Big" Crime boss (that's what i've always wanted to be right..lol) and launder illegal arms, drug, stolen money through my legit IT company

Ok..I think that may be have been little over a million lol sorry..got carried away lol

I chose other. I would invest the money in a number of things, new house, nice car, some in the bank, perhaps give a little to chairty, and then i would buy a nice computer. I laugh at everyone who voted for "I'll quit my job or go into early retirement". If you can retire on a million dollars, please call me and tell me how rofl. 1 million dollars is not enough to retire on for the people on this site. The story would be different if you were a single 50 year old person and up. I know im just throwing things around here, but beleive me, your million would ware down quickly.

wow. 1 million and you'd buy a condo? That better be one nice condo! Me, I'd pay for my college education! Jk, but honestly, if I didn't have a part time job or something, I'd go nuts. I 'd like to have something to do... .but I wouldn't work full time.

I'd definetely be near a coast.... and I'd own a car which cost more than $1000, but nothing fancy...

10-19-2005, 01:07 AM
well i live in so-cal so i wont be buying two homes thats for sure...if im lucky i can find a decent one way out in the desert area for under 650k and then make the hour and a half commute ( funny thing is thats only about 25 min longer than i do now).

but anyway i would for sure spend it all. id go crazy if i didnt work so i would buy all the toys on my wish list to make the life i already have a bit more fun then get a job that i enjoy the actual work more than i do the pay. a million dollars just aint what it used to be though

I said I would put it in a bank and let it gain interest....BUT, I would first buy a house big enough for my two children and I. Nothing fancy....just comfortable. Then, the rest I would put in the Bank for college expenses and such. The kids always come first. After college is paid off...Party Time for daddy, baby!!

I'm still in college, so I'd split it up. I'd invest a significant sum into a few profitable stocks & bonds that are out there, maybe some real estate too. Another sum would sit in the bank & collect interest. & I'd used the rest to pay my college education & setting up for life in the real world (house, car, marriage (if it comes to that)).

The first thing I'd do though is get a new phone number. Once family & friends catch wind of your newfound wealth, you know.

I would have to pay off all my debts first, then buy a bigger house, then open up my own photo and video studio.

pdnielsen
05-05-2006, 06:51 AM
I'd buy a bunch of stocks and re-invest the dividends. Then I could buy a car or three, a house or two AND retire really early. It would not be an "either/or" proposition!

I chose other.

For me personally money is defintely not the most important thing in life! But if I got so much money I think I would start a program which would increase the education in schools. Education is one of the most important things in life and all the choices we and everyone else makes every day effects what happens, positive and negative things in life.

Many things costs and I believe strongly that if more people would be educated in how things works and in the possibilities of change by just being aware that there are alternative ways of doing things.

So better education in schools is where I would like to spend a big some of that money. I think that I would keep 80% of all the money for myself and for these money I would buy a house which is located very near nature. I'm a nature person and I like to go big walks in the forest.
