Re: SBC Yahoo DSL
Tell me, should I do this also...here is my current problem: When accessing email an error message occurs that says "javascript is disabled, would you like to switch back to the old version?" A link is provided to correct internet settings to enable java - but my settings are already AOK to allow for it. Any help you could offer would be much appreciated.

Re: SBC Yahoo DSL
Today is the day my sbc yahoo was supposed to be activated, and the cd couldn't make a handshake with sbc; tech say their database is down.Nice start! Now i have time to do the install without the cd-everyone says beware of the CD. So I'm not clear about whether I should do the speedstream 5100 and the linksys wrt54g router all at the same time. I use win 98se and I think the connection wizard should be ok, and i would love to not see yahoo stuff everywhere-already had to unhijack my start page.
Read lots of stuff, but need clarity on the process. Should i hook up the router and set the ppoe stuff before i go to the sbc page 192.68, ect.?

Re: SBC Yahoo DSL
Replying to myself and all: Sorry about the newbie post. Just so everyone knows, I learned a few things in logging on and subscribing to sbc. 1. you dont need the cd, but I notice that sbc installer ver 5.01-ACSX had checkboxes to opt out of many of their programs- but beware its first order of business was to hijack your browser home page, and put an adware program on your system. New speedstream 5100 was easy to configure and is your 1st stop on the no cd registration road, go to http://www.obviously.com/tech_tips/Y...tup_no_CD.html Next stop was to hook up a wireless router- i used the Linksys ...54 and though it has some spotty reviews, it works just fine- leave everything the same on the speedstream, and to my surprise stay with the default, Automatic configuration on the Linksys. So far so good. Before youstart this oddessy, you ethernet card has to work and be able to go to the speedstream web page which is generated by the little black box-just go to its sddress192.168.0.1

Re: SBC Yahoo DSL
I feel sorry for you guys for having to deal with SBC dsl, I have had Bellsouth for nearly a year now and hope to upgrade to the new 3.0 Mbps dsl, not sure on the upload speed though, i think its 768 or something. Unfathomable, how $60/month will get me twice T1 speeds. lol

Re: SBC Yahoo DSL
Well, I have had my piece of crappy cake from SBC now. I have been a customer of SBC (with 1 static ip) for about 4 years (since dsl came to my location here in mountain view, california). I recently moved to san jose,ca and my god sbc has made it so f@#%ing difficult for people to set up dsl. I just had their flavor of crap, and tired with them. Already 5 cases in 2 days (It;s been only couple days since the service was activated). Nobody even told that they have this crappy pppoe service. It doesn't work my linksys v-vpn broadband router. drops the connections often. And most of all their crappy, annoying programs of yahoo and sbc they install during the setup to snoop around your pc and without even asking for permission (Maybe its in their long 10 page licensing agreement). They will even tranmit your browsing habits. I hate that stuff. I'm a technical person , and have many servers such as oracle, sqlserver, iis and streaming server running and it was a big mistake to sign up for dynamic. I never thought it would be pppoe. Now I can't cancel. I called up COVAD communications, and they were willing to install DSl at my home. Many people don't know that and think SBC is the only option for DSL. Atleast in my location in San Jose, CA ther is covad. Somebody should do something about these monopoly Bas-Turds. Also they say you will be getting the highest possible speed in your selection, but in many cases you won't be even getting 30% of what they say. In my case in San Jose downtown, all you get is less than 128 up and less than 384 down. This is the case in prime downtown where all the technology companies are located. LIARS!!! Just imagine other residential locations. And for this prime location, the highest they have is 'express' (and that too crappy express). no pro, no symmetric.
I'm planning to go with static now. But they're already making it difficult for me to change the plans. They are trying to extend the current service as long as possible whether it works or not. Will see what happens.

Re: SBC Yahoo DSL
Help!!! I just received my SBC Yahoo DSL Installation kit in the mail, and after reading all of your posts, I'm terrified. Is there any advice anyone can give me before I get started on this. I am going to try to set up a desktop and a laptop to my network.

Re: SBC Yahoo DSL
Hi:
I work for SBC in the DSL side of the house. There are all kinds of horror stories I've heard about using the Yahoo! software and connection manager that comes with your service. Hopefully you are using XP, if you are, go into my network places and choose new network connection, or new connection wizard, or something like that. Then it will guide you thru setting up a connection. You don't even need to use the SBC software, except as a coaster for cold drinks, like I do. If you use a PPPOE router, it's even easier, but you have to use the XP connection to register, using the username and password they tell you to use to get to the registration site. Once you do that, just change the username and password to the ones you chose when you signed up and you should be golden. Good Luck.

Re: SBC Yahoo DSL
Dont Use DSL atm , becuase cable is cheaper in my area for much higher speeds avg.
As for the dropping of computers on your network, I had a problem similar to that with my home LAN (not wireless) first problem i found was the modem, after 5 service calls a new line ran , they finally listened to me and replaced my Cable modem, fixed , well except when they reset their DHCP and my IP Address changes , stupid no-servers protection.
Other things to check , exspecialy if you are using a WAN, if you live in a nieghborhood, or apartment complex. Wireless routers can be self-"Hacked" to take all Bands, basicly the router is using up the entire ghz range for itself which can cause other wirelss networks in the area to become unstable, easy way to check is by using ethernet.
Ive only used linksys routers and they do have a log function, dunno how descriptive it is, never used it myself.
Reseting your IP Addess on each computer might speed up the re-connection, also reseting your Routers IP, I use DHCP so not a big deal for me.
On a side not, its now illegal to install Spyware, adware, or anything on someones Computer without their Consent. Wonder how this will stack, could it be another Spam law? worthless? so read the user agreement, anything installed before the option of accepting (even by accepting terms of BS) could fall under this law and you might be able to cuase problems for the Yahoo crap.
EDIT: Opps also if you are using Wireless you can try changing your channel on the router.

Re: SBC Yahoo DSL
I had similar issues with getting dropped connections but after going to bridge mode everything seams to be fine. Now i am trying to Remote desktop into my pc from work and i am unable to, i think the problem is my speed stream 5100B. I have a netgear Mr814 wireless router with port 5900 forwarded to the PC of my choice (I changed my registry to reflect the change from port 3389 to 5900) . I have all the firewalls disabled, any suggestions?

SKYHN! HELP! Re: SBC Yahoo DSL

When I first got SBC, I didnt want all that Yahoo crap, cuz the program sucked and so did the browser. So until I got a router, I just disabled all the other Yahoo stuff and used the Enternet 300 software and had it load and autoconnect on startup. After I got the router, I simply put in the linksys disc that came with it and followed the instructions, it did everything for me.
Most important question: What modem did you get? Some of them are incompatable with the Linksys router and need their firmware updated.
Also, the SBC/Pacbell forum at dslreports.com is the official tech support forum for SBC Yahoo DSL, they have 2 or 3 techs that man the boards, nice guys and they get things fixed fast. I got my line uncapped about a week early from one of them, and hes also calling me tomorrow to connect me with the retension department to get my montly fee lowered, hopefully.

How did you do this exactly? I'm not computer illiterate. I built my computer myself, but am new to dsl.
Win xp pro
linksys BEFSR41 router
SpeedStream 5100 modem
I cannot pull up ipconfig. It flashes and goes away. So, that route is unavailable to me and I dont see enternet anywhere and wouldn't know how you did it anyway. I tried using xp software to connect and keep getting errors. I didn't install any of the extras from the cd. Just the basic stuff.
Can you help me out?
