Action against email spam

Ok lately I have been getting spam email from the "Opt-In Network" 3 times in the past 2 days I clicked the link to "opt-out" and the page said I was immedietly removed from the list. Well, obviously if I had to do so 3 times, this is not true. So I then chose their second option, reply to the email, with "remove" in the subject field. I did so, along with a message within the email stating possible legal action if the mailing continued. I just checked my email again, and have recieved another spam email from this network. Their final way to opt out, is to send them a letter through US mail. I dont want to wait for a letter to get there, I dont want to pay for postage. I should have been removed days ago from their list. Hell, if not for sneaky companys selling email addresses, I shouldnt be on the list in the first place. So, i clearly chose to opt out. I clearly sent an email telling them to take me off their list and send me no further email. They didnt give a message saying "it will take x amount of hours" (which it shouldnt take anyway) So I want to know where I can report this, and how to go about taking action against it. Any help appreciated. I mean, I am assuming it is just like phone solicitors. Once you tell them to take you off their list, if they call then you have a case. Am I right?

Hmmm, you know, most "opt out" requests in the email are actually just schemes to verify if the email they are sending to is valid. So if they determine the email is valid (by getting a response via the opt out), they include that email int a verified list and continue sending their spam ...

I never click on those opt out links ... I just include their email address to my mail filter and redirect their emails to my trash can...

As for how to prevent it, I guess you can make the effort to send their names to the BBB, or report them to online "spam cops" if there are any ... personally, I don't bother, since it either takes too much time for action to be taken (if at all), or there will be lack of proof, since some spam emailers can spoof email addresses, hence the company can just disclaim and disavow any knowledge of spamage ...

you can complain to thier isp as well. many isps take complaints about spam seriously.

and as for those remove name from list things, most of them do as they say, and remove you, usually after a day or 2. unless the email is coming from someone you never heard of, in which case they may just be using it for confirmation.

Yep I finally gave up with hotmail and now I only allow in my inbox those emails from people on my email address book.

All others Emails will go to the trash. I review, just in case I have to add someone to my address list, otherwise I just empty the trash with a click.

When you click "Opt Out" or send a "Remove Me" message, you're actually adding your name to a "Known Good" e-mail address list. The original spammer may never spam you again, but they'll sell your name to others. That's how they make their real money. I read an article a few weeks ago about how "Known Good" lists of 250,000 addresses went for anywhere between $15,000 and $30,000.

Just delete the e-mails.

that really depends on the source of the email. if you signed up for emails from a site, either to get something free or enter a sweepstakes, et al., they are generally quite good about honoring their privacy policy and removing you from lists. if you dont know where an email is coming from then, yes, you could end up in that trap. youre better off just deleting it.

personally, i dont remove myself from lists until im regularly sent emails from the same place. the occasional nonsense just gets deleted.
