MS buys Rare

British developer Rare, the legendary studio founded by the Stamper brothers, is thought to have been bought by Microsoft in a deal worth between £250 million and £350 million – with an official announcement expected at X02 in Seville later this month.

The studio, which has traditionally been seen as one of Nintendo’s leading second-party development houses – producing key titles for the N64 such as Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Banjo Kazooie and Jet Force Gemini – is currently working on Starfox Adventures for the GameCube, and the production of that title is thought to be unaffected by the deal.

Apparently, Nintendo, a major share holder, only owned 49% of Rare and Microsoft has bought up the rest. So much for it being all rumor. Quite the coup d'etat.

Let's see.

The original owners and developers, "the Stamper brothers", are being bought out. So, I guess they won't be involved very much with the development from now on.

Rare doesn't have as much to do with Nintendo as they used to.

Microsoft just purchased them. I guess to develop for Xbox. Microsoft will most likely have to buy out Nintendo's stake also.

So, I'm trying to figure out what Microsoft bought besides some old royalties for old games and some employees for 1/2 billion dollars.

Kane, microsoft is well known for buying a developer - then letting them make their own games. Rare is worth that much money, cause they have such a huge track record. I doubt much will change, other than the fact that nintendo basically just lost one of their biggest devs.

Does anyone see whats going on here? Rather than let the developers choose which platform(s) they want to develop for, MS is just buying them up and making them develop for Xbox. So now it doesnt matter that Xbox isnt selling, if MS owns every major developer and doesnt allow them to develop for the other systems, Xbox cant fail.

When Sega was going head to head with Nintendo with the Genesis VS Super Nintnedo, did this kinda thing happen? No. When Sega, Nintendo and Sony battled it out, did this happen? No. So MS steps in, with their bags of money, and is gonna do things the way they want.

All the while Xbox owners are cheering MS for what they are doing, not knowing its killing console gaming as we know it. Im just gonna sit back and watch what was once a great line of entertainment turn into a whore house and watch as MS releases a console that costs $600, because its the only one on the market.

No, I only see a very paranoid individual with a public hate for Microsoft expressing his private nightmare

Microsoft cannot kill console gaming - unless they can buy out the country of Japan and all the console companies over there...
