AMD Names Clawhammer, Cuts Prices

AMD has announced that the "Althon 64" the name of their 64 bit desktop CPU. The processor was referred to as "Clawhammer" before.

I suppose we will never lose such brand names: Athlon, Pentium, GeForce, Radeon, etc. The press release is here.

AMD has also cut prices on the Althon XP line:

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) recently released its new pricing list for the Athlon XP line, slashing prices of its Athlon XP 2100+, 2000+, 1900+, 1800+ and 1700+ processors by more than 40%.

As industry sources indicated earlier, the price of the company’s Athlon XP 2200+ stayed above US$100, at US$157, while prices for the high-end Athlon XP 2400+, 2600+, 2700+ and 2800+ remained unchanged.

Digitimes has a chart of prices here.

Hammer is so much cooler, not to mention it actually distinguishes a new era of processors. If anything, this is counter productive for uneducated consumers. It will just be passed off as another Althon in the mix.

yeah, it would be nice if manufacturers would change the name when they released an entirely new product. only so many numbers you can tolerate.

that completely goes against their reason for the naming scheme of the xp series processors. now they are using a smaller number to identify the processor! sounds like a step backwards for what the average everyday consumer will perceieve this chip to be. hmmm. how does this look to the
Athlon 64
Athlon XP1800+

if you didn't know any better, which would you think was the newer and faster processor? damn thats a stupid idea for a name!

Either this will kill AMD or begins to kill it. Its like, Commodore 64 = AMD 64 ! But not all consumers are that ignorant. Consumers who need the Clawhammer (AMd 64) will probably know whats going on in the tech world.

The only problem is:

General Consumers > Technical Consumers

And by big margins.
