No let-up in warez crackdown
WASHINGTON--Federal investigators have turned up roughly 30 suspects and continue to raid college campuses a month after moving to shut down a massive software piracy ring, a Customs Service official said Monday.
Federal agents have not arrested any members of the "DrinkOrDie" piracy ring, but roughly 30 people, including an executive of a major company, have retained lawyers to negotiate settlements with the government, said Allan Doody, who is overseeing the anti-piracy effort.
Well, it looks as if the Gov. is cracking down on this. I know this is a topic that has a lot of opinions but is it worth it in the long run to persue this?

Give who a break? A pirate is a pirate is a pirate. I don't think I would mind it so much if they hacked and cracked for their own pleasures...but no...they got to sell it to others. Personally, I view this as illegal as do many others. Nope, these are the bozos who probably make computer software companies raise their prices to bilk honest buyers to pay for people with no morals. I say go for them, and job well done.

College kids aren't the pirates. I'm sayingmost of them don't have jobs, therefor can't afford to go out and buy software. So, they share...you'll never stop that.
I don't understand this idea of keeping someone from learning. Just because they aren't rich, they should be stupid? The FBI should be taxing up businesses who use pirated software to gain revenue.

Kids do have a break. It's called educational discount. And it can net you some really cheap software.
While in school I got MS Visual C for 90$. It's regular over 300$.
Every piece of MS software can be purchased with an educational discount, including their OSes. Most other companies with expensive software follow suit.

Whether the cost $300.00 or $90.00 to some students it may as well be $1000.00. Not all these kids are guilty of selling software, it is only a small persentage of them that are doing it. The rest are just trying to survive and get an education. Instead of spending tax $ on trying to fry these kids, why not use the money to help them instead. Maybe then the Government can concertrate on the more important issues that need addressed in this wonderful country we live in called USA!
Theres are 2 kinds of pirates, one is the high dollar pro counterfeiting the stuff and selling it as genuine, the second is the casual copier, collector, or whatever else you want call him. The first kind you can seize the copies and put a legit dollar value on what was recovered. The second kind I discount GREATLY any attempt to put a $$$ value on with one simple question, would ANYONE with a COPY they downloaded BUY that software otherwise, or would they have never bothered with it had they not found that copy. Try and sort the copiers that use it because they need it and don't want to buy it from the user that has no use or need of a program and just adds it to his collection, good luck.
The outrageous claims of economic impact with this problem are preposterous! I have NEVER heard ANY software company or other "copyright interest" company claim piracy put em out of business. The FACT is poor management, planning, or financing is why companies go bust.
You know that legal and illegal doesn't equate to right, wrong, moral, or immoral in someone's conduct.

Now, I know. You really meant this as a joke.
It's extremely rare when a law can justifiably be broken because the law was corrupt in the first place. I'm confused on where you think people don't have the right to protect their property (copyrights in this case).
Everyone should have a piece of property for free. Just because it's too expensive for them to buy. I'm sorry. But, that is called communism. I can't think of another word for it.
I have never heard of any person going to jail or paying a fine for having copies of software, movies or music. Every single one of them that did go to jail or was fined, was trying to make money off of selling pirated materials (other peoples property). There is a fine difference.

There is much greed in this human race...possibly why the race is never over.
No answer stands from the rest in this situation.

First thing I want to clear up is I am NOT nor ever been a COMMUNIST! I served in the Armed Forces for 6 years and did it proudly! I resent that statement you made Kane and I have always respected people on this site never have I had a cause to be angry with anyone! But that statement I take as a personal attack on ME! If any man stood in my face and called me that I would knock him on his A@@!! If you thing going after these kids is right so be it, but never call me a communist again!!! Also I never said people don't have a right to protect their property! I just question the motiives of the Govt going after our kids for some dumb shit like this! I'm confused as to why you think I meant that statement as a joke! Please Clarify!!

Oh grow up. Do you even know what communist means? Or do you just assume that it's an insult?
Kane is right when saying everyone gets everything for free is a communist idea. It is.
I hate how americans throw around the word 'communism' like it's some great evil.
Communism is a good idea in theory, it just doesn't work in practice.
EDIT: Not to say that wiping out communism is a bad idea. It tends to hurt people who are stuck in a communist system. It's a good idea to abolish that system. But it's not evil or anything, and that's what I hate. People always talk like it's a big evil. It's just another political system, not inherently evil. It's the people that make it evil.

And my view on pirated software is this:
If you need it for learning, and are in school (thus having no income), then it should have been considered a school supply expense, and should have been planned for and purchased legally.
If you need it for learning, and are not in school, then you should damn well have a job, and you should be able to pick up a standard version.
If you are still in highschool, and don't have a job, but would like it for future learning, then you can still get it at educational discount through your school. Get your parents to chip in, or get a damn job.
Sorry, there is no justification for piracy of software.

Quite true. They most likely would not have bought it, since most people that pirate software don't truly need the software.
If you don't need it, and don't pay for it, then you shouldn't have it anyway.
There is no excuse for piracy. It's illegal any way you look at it. Don't try and justify it; by pirating in any form, you are breaking the law.
Now, if you choose to break the law anyway, feel free. Just don't ***** moan and whine if you get caught and charged.
