No Update For Leaked XP Keys

No Update For Leaked XP Keys

When Service Pack 1 is released for Windows XP, users that are using various leaked keys will not be able to install the update:

The beta of Service Pack 1 for Windows XP has now shipped to testers and, as previously advertised, it declines to install if you're using a leaked WinXP licence key. But - again as previously advertised - it doesn't deactivate your installation, just stops you applying the service pack.

So far, people using copies of Windows XP that have been activated using one of the leaked keys have had no trouble getting patches and updates because Windows Update didn't check the validity of their licence. But as Microsoft is clearly stating that licence information is now being gathered by Windows Update, and that a "validly licensed copy of Windows ensures that you will receive on-going updates," then it seems pretty logical to presume that an invalidly licensed copy of Windows ensures that you won't.

I assume this will be the case for other updates, also. The Register has the story.

Only inconveniencing users again.

It won't stop a downloaded or slip-streamed copy of SP1 from being installed.

Will this be true for the corporate edition of the operating system, since the authentication works differently?

Yes. It's actually made explicitly for the corporate edition, from what I've heard. The corporate edition is the most pirated one, because it doesn't use authentication.

Kane, sounds to me like the patch itself will verify the key. So you'll have to find a cracked version of the service pack.

I think they are talking about two separate things.

Windows Update is the means of software delivery. The article says that Windows Update is verifying the key.

It would be too difficult to package the key checking within the package itself. There's no way to change the key checking later.

This won't have any effect on the corporate version of the service packs. Larger corporations may have set up their own "Corporate Windows Update". Most have been excluded from Microsoft's website for updates. Meaning, users connecting from most large corporations cannot download the updates from Microsoft. Their connections are rejected.

Besides, the article predicts that the corporate version doesn't even check the key.

Well then there wouldn't be much point in doing it at all, since all it would affect is the casual user. The casual user is already prevented from pirating.

Yes it does apply to the corporate edtion. As it stands that edition wasn't even supposed to be released to the end users. The CD-Key for it is the same for all buyers. I've purchased 2 copies for myself and about 10 for work and all have been shipped with the exact same Key. Basically if the key begins with FCKGW, we're hosed until someone modifys the SP1 install.
