Immersion and experience
I was chatting (as usual) in mIRC tonight with Jeff from TG and brought up EVA again, saying how I wished EVA was a happier series. I then mentioned that for me, when I watch a really good series - be it Chinese serials, American drama (though less so for American series because they're a lot more episodic), anime series, or really good book series (DragonLance, Chronicles of Prydain), it's almost as if I'm in the movie or book itself. The characters are people I know - they're my friends. The places I've been. The adventures I've experienced.
When I remember those series, I don't think of them as "that was a good watch," or something of the like. I would go, "Ah, those were great times!"
I was surprised when Jeff said, "No, I don't get that," because I had assumed that many people felt the same way as I did.
So to a larger audience, do you ever get so immersed at all?

When I read an engrossing novel or see an entrancing movie I also have a feeling of immersion into the story. Though this happens much more with books and far less with anime, tv, or movies. But with books if it's something that happens fairly common. I know a lot of people don't. The bad thing is though, when I'm not reading something that I'm into, I think about it and possibilities of what could happen in the story.. and it usually spoils any twists or surprises in the book.

For some reason I'm listening to Kenny Loggins' "Return to Pooh Corner," which seems oddly appropriate in light of this thread.
I agree, books definitely are a lot more immersive - at least good books are. And the requirement for how good a book must be in order for it to be immersive is much lower than that of a movie or TV series.

The best immersion is from games.

Yeah I get that sometimes, when I'm all mad hyped over a game and it comes out and I play it nonstop. Like WindWaker for example. I've ****ing dreamed about a few games when I get into them like that. Another good example is BG2.
