PC3200 DDR400 RAM question

Hi, I don't consider myself a novice to building PCs but I haven't yet tinkered with RAM timings. I have 3x 512MB sticks of PC3200 DDR plugged into an Asus K8V Deluxe w/ AMD Athlon 64 3000+, to get the specifics down.

So my question is this:
Everytime my BIOS is going through its motions it shows my all the specs, my processor speed shows at 2.0ghz, which is correct, but the DRAM clock is set at 200mhz which seems incorrect to me. For anyone else out there who has this type of ram, shouldn't it be at 400mhz? If so, can anyone explain what settings to adjust to get this correct?

Any more information you need just email me or ask here and I'll gladly look into whatever you need.

Re: PC3200 DDR400 RAM question

the setting is correct. 200MHz is the actual clock speed, while 400MHz is the synthetically doubled clock speed (as in double data rate--"DDR"). BIOSes almost always show the undoubled clockrates.

200 is correct because the frequency is 200 Mhz but the data is transmitted twice on every clock cycle giving a total of 400 million data chunks per second, hence the moniker DDR (double data rate).

Exclamation Re: PC3200 DDR400 RAM question

Hello

Well my DDR 3200 memory runs at 320 mhz, so should i change mine to 200 mhz, i thought DDR 3200 runs at a tenth of the 3200 that was given, so that would equal 320 mhz.

Regards

Andrew

Re: PC3200 DDR400 RAM question

if your 3200 is actually running at 320mhz, you have the ultimate gem in overclocking ram.

Re: PC3200 DDR400 RAM question

Overclocking - The process of installing high hopes, dumb luck, and several paychecks into a rectangular box which transmits a signal to a screen that displays your fate. The outcome is usually depressing.

Or seriously, it's the process of running computer chips faster than their rated speed.
