Angry CPU installation not going as planned

Hey all,

So, my current CPU has been a bit wonky ever since I had it. It would randomly freeze up and give a fantastic green screen of death every once in a while. But it worked fine, other than that one annoying habit. Anyways, I finally set aside some time to get a new CPU to replace the current one. I'll post the relevant specs and issue below:

Current CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ (black box)
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-M61P-S3

Replacement CPU: AMD Athlon 62 X2 7750 (black box)
same mobo

I took out the current CPU and installed the replacement. Usually, with the current CPU, the system gives a happy 'beep' about 5 seconds after power up (this I guess is what you guys call 'post' or something?). But didn't hear any beep this time, and the monitor was blank. I made sure before I powered up that I had installed everything correctly. I put enough Arctic Silver on the CPU, the heatsink/fan was on correctly and the fan's power was connected. The fan on the heatsink worked when the system was powered up. So what gives?

I took out the replacement CPU and installed it again. Same deal. No 'beep' and nothing on the monitor. I even grabbed the monitor from the other computer to see if it was the GPU or something, but still nothing.

SO I took out the replacement CPU, after two (what I thought were proper installations) and put back in the current CPU. The system works.

What are your guesses as to my problem? Is it just a defective CPU? (I can't see anything physically wrong with the CPU. all pins are straight.) Is there some compatibility issue between the CPU and mobo? Does it sound like I did something wrong?

Cheers,
rabidgecko

Re: CPU installation not going as planned

Specs are:

mobo: Gigabyte GA-M61P-S3
GPU: HIS Radeon HD 3850 ICEQ3 Turbox
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+
Heatsink/fan: Scythe Katana 2
PSU: OCZ StealthXStream 600W
RAM: OCZ Platinum XTC PC2-6400 2GB

And I was wanting to replace that CPU with an AMD Athlon 64 X2 7750

I haven't tried BIOS. I might give that a go later tonight or tomorrow.

Re: CPU installation not going as planned

Ok, so I tried resetting CMOS and then installing the new CPU. No dice.

Right now I'm thinking it's a defective CPU... unless anyone has any other ideas they have for me to try. Otherwise I'll take it back and exchange it for another one.

have you updated your BIOS, if you haven't then that can be a possible reason why the cpu is not working.. btw check this site out, you can get the BIOS patch and there's a list of cpu and models that work with you motherboard http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Support/M...2434#anchor_os
