Gaming Notebook Recomendations?

Long story short, I'm going to be away from home for 3 months this summer, and that means away from my beautiful desktop.

I have a perfectly good laptop, but it has a Radeon XPRESS 200M which just doesn't cut it when it comes to gaming.

So, I'm playing with the idea of getting a better one. Basically, I want it to be able to handle things like: TF2, L4D, CS:S, Titan Quest, and Unreal Tournament 3 on pretty good settings.

I don't know how much something like that would cost me since I've never gone out looking for a gaming notebook.

I have a 9800 GT in my desktop which gives you an idea of the kind of performance I'm used to. Anyone have any experience with a particular mobile video card version? Also, what manufacturers are good when it comes to gaming notebooks? I don't really want to go with a custom rig like Falcon Northwest because I'm leaving in a week and I don't want to wait for it to be made.

Thanks!

Re: Gaming Notebook Recomendations?

Best Buy carries the Dell XPS line. Those are pretty decent (non-custom) gaming rigs that you can pick up at a brick and mortar.

What do you think about this Asus (cheapest laptop under 'gaming', 9800M GS)?

EDIT: It's not available in any stores near me so nevermind.

Re: Gaming Notebook Recomendations?

Okay, I have a new idea. I was thinking about shipping my desktop to the place that I'm going, but I sort of feel like it would break somehow in the move. But, my dad had the same idea and he thinks it would be fine if we packaged it up pretty well.

I could also take out the HDD, since that's what I would be worried about losing (although I'm probably just paranoid, those things get shipped around all the time). Any thoughts?

Re: Gaming Notebook Recomendations?

I have no experience doing that, and I'm sure opinions would vary so I can't say for sure.

My instinct would be never to ship your PC (I've always moved mine myself).

It doesn't matter how well it is packed, if the box gets dropped the components inside (that aren't properly weight balanced) can easily break. I would only recommend shipping it if you are willing to take it apart completely and reassemble it at your destination.

Re: Gaming Notebook Recomendations?

Are you thinking I should pack each part in separate boxes, or just take it apart and pack it all into the same box?

Re: Gaming Notebook Recomendations?

Pack them in separate boxes, preferably in antistatic , plastic bags if you have or can lay your hands on such? And with some bubble plastic around each box too, to make really sure.

Re: Gaming Notebook Recomendations?

Hmm... I'm having trouble picturing anything being likely to break. I mean, when you order a computer from Dell or another manufacturer, it gets sent to you fully assembled. What components do you think are likely to have issues?

Also, if one component breaks, I can order a new one. It's still way cheaper than buying a new laptop like I planned.
