266mhz Ram in gx270

I got a GX270 and it has 256mb of ram running at 333mhz. I have a 512mb stick that runs at 266 stock sitting around, just wanted to make sure it wouldn't cause any problems with the mobo to stick the 512 into the machine and boot it up. It's essentially underclocking, which can't actually cause any harm right?

I'd rather have 512 running at 266 than 256 running at 333...

-----------------------------
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 OC to 3.6Mhz (400FSB)
Mobo: XFX nForce 680i LT SLI
Graphics: Palit GeForce 8800 GT Super 1GB PCIe
RAM: 8 GB DDR2 800Mhz Dual Channel (4 x 2GB)
PS: Power Up 800w Power Supply w/2 80mm
OS: Windows Vista Home Prem 64-bit OEM SP1 & Windows 7 Beta 1 64 bit

Re: 266mhz Ram in gx270

You will not get dual channel using those sticks together. That is about a 5% performance loss for the RAM. And the RAM will run at the slower RAM's speed.

-----------------------------
Case: Antec P180B + 2 X 120mm Noctua fans.
Psu: Corsair TX 750W
Mobo: Gigabyte P35-DS3 P.
Cpu: E6850 3.6GHz
Cooler: Scythe Ninja.
Video cards: 2 X Sapphire HD 4870.
W.D. Caviar 640 mb SATA 2 Black.
Sound: Auzentech X FI Prelude.
Speaks: Camebridge Desktop Theatre.
OS: XP Pro 32 + SP 3.

Re: 266mhz Ram in gx270

I wasn't going to use them together. One is 512 (the slower) and one is 256 (the faster). I just wanted to double check that I couldnt' physically harm my mobo by throwing in a stick of rarm that is rated lower than the specs say it takes. The moo specs say it runs 333 and 400 mhz ram, but not 266. Thats all

Re: 266mhz Ram in gx270

O.k.

It wont harm anything running that RAM. Just run the 512mb stick and see how the system behave?
If it boots as it should? Then just run a RAM test like this for 2 full cykles = 200% to make sure:

Re: 266mhz Ram in gx270

Lol, I didn't even have to run a RAM test... the OS is SO much better now, especially when you have two things open (like firefox and a terminal). 256mb will RUN OpenSuse11, but not very well.... haha
