Question Old system - advice re upgrade needed, please

Hi,

My system hasn't been substantially upgraded for 5 years, but it all works well, so...

I do get the odd memory problems (lack of), though I do have 1.5 Gb of RAM. I have an ASUS A7N8X v2.0 Deluxe motherboard and I wonder if I could upgrade to 2.0 Gb of RAM. Will this motherboard be able to handle that? Does anyone know, or know where I can find out, please?

Thanks in advance,

HB11.

Re: Old system - advice re upgrade needed, please

Hi!

Yeah, you can upgrade to up to 3gb of 184 pin DDR RAM ( Not to be confused by the 240 pin DDR2 and DDR3, wich are incompatible). But 2 gb of RAM (identical sticks except for brand) is the best way, as you othervice will loose the dual channel RAM setup wich doubles the bandwith. And gives a memory performance push at about 5%. Besides, 3gb of RAM for XP are overkill.

The RAM speed supported by your mobo are: PC3200/PC2700/PC2100/PC1600. Check the label on the RAM stick(s) you allready got. Cuz if you buy a faster stick. It will run at the lower RAM sticks speed. But suggest you remove that 512mb stick and get a 1gb stick instead.

If you wanna get a comletely new 2gb RAM kit ? This is a cheap and good one:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231039

With a good set of 2 gb of RAM the whole system will run much smoother.

Thumbs up Re: Old system - advice re upgrade needed, please

Heysan, Goran!

Thanks for all your advice - that's very kind of you. I will certainly look into the product at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231039

The information about the RAM speed is very helpful too. Your suggestion that I remove my 512 Mb stick and get a 1 Gb stick instead is what I was going to do. Thanks for confirming that's OK.

Regards,

HB11.

Wink Re: Old system - advice re upgrade needed, please

Ah, I misspelled it: Hejsan!

Yes, I used to work in piano bars in Sweden, Denmark, Norway and even Iceland right through the '80s and into the '90s. I love Scandinavia!

Thanks again for your help, Goran.

Regards,

John.

Re: Old system - advice re upgrade needed, please

Aha! Did you work as a musician or as bar tender or such?

Hope you have the possibility to go back some day. Denmark and Norway are very nice too. I live close to Malmö in the southern part of this country. So it's just a short trip over the bridge to Kopenhagen. And I use to go to Norway fly fishing Salmon and sea trout now and then.

See ya!

No, I was a pro piano entertainer between 1978 & 1997 - you can read more about me at http://www.broadjam.com/johnlord

By the way, my avatar here is not really me - I just thought I'd use it 'cos he looks like a really cool guy!!! LOL

It's funny - I know Copenhagen very well, and I've played in places all over Sweden (even in Kiruna!), but I've never been to Malmö. Of course, the bridge wasn't there in those days, so it wasn't so easy, and my contracts never took me there. Maybe one day...

Very nice! So we have a celebrity as member here! I did listen to a couple of your songs. Sounds like a more positive Rupert Hine style kinda music with a touch of humor. Like it.

Oh? Even in Kiruna? Then you have really been from south to north here. Been in Stockholm too then I guess?

A celebrity? Well, I did get pretty well-known in Sweden during the '80s, I guess...

Maybe there is a bit of Rupert Hine's sound and voice similarity there in my songs. I hadn't thought of that.

North to South indeed ... except Malmö!!! Stockholm? I love it. I used to play at the Sheraton there in the early '80s - very cold in Winter, but beautiful in Summer, like most of the country I suppose. Great piano bar, right in the main part of the hotel, though I guess a lot has changed now. You're making me feel nostalgic for the '80s...

Do you work in computers? I noticed that you have posted quite a bit with a good knowledge base.

Re: Old system - advice re upgrade needed, please

Yeah, Sheraton Stockholm, is a very, very nice hotel indeed. I have only been there twice delivering papers and blue prints to arab customers for the architechts office I worked for back in the late 70's. I saw quite much of it. Not the piano bar though unfortunatly.

Naah, I'm just a pc geek lol. Retired (after been hit by a car in 95) Worked as a fishing warden then.

Thanks for the kind words!

But this whas the very first forum I joined as a newbie. And since then, I have learned a lot from this forums members and from people at a couple of other computer tech forums too.

Unfortunatly, many of the really good, older regular members seems to have quit coming here nowadays. I miss Ion Silverbolt and Redwench for ex.

OK, cool. I was first at the Sheraton Stockholm in 1981 (I think). These were usually one- or two-month contracts, as I recall.

I guess I'm a bit of a PC geek too - I've been into computers for over 9 years and I'm still amazed at what they can do. I've also learned a lot from forums all over the place. If I need more help I'll know I can ask you, Goran, I think.

Regards,

John.

Re: Old system - advice re upgrade needed, please

Yeah, it very easy to become a pc addict lol. And it's one of the few of my hobbies together with fly fishing, photo and (Japanese) gardens / gardening, that I think will be a life long interest.

Just ask away man.
