Re: Unlock All Cores?

While you do have a good chance of unlocking the cores of the X2 550BE, there is also a small chance that you wont. And even if you do unlock all the cores, it is not guaranteed that your system will be stable. If you really need a quad and you have the money? I say go with the 940.

Make sure you have a good cpu cooler slapped on when unlocking. The cpu temp will go up some.

This is the mobo on your list that can be used for unlocking the cores on: Gigabyte GA-MA790XT-UD4P + the F4G Bios. This, according to a compability list that I did find. The mobos, that are able to fix the core unlocking needs to have ACC support = "Advanced Clock Calibration Link" for AMD OverDrive (SB710 or SB750 southbridge).

-----------------------------
Case: Antec P180B + 2 X 120mm Noctua fans.
Psu: Corsair TX 750W
Mobo: Gigabyte P35-DS3 P.
Cpu: E6850 3.6GHz
Cooler: Scythe Ninja.
Video cards: 2 X Sapphire HD 4870.
W.D. Caviar 640 mb SATA 2 Black.
Sound: Auzentech X FI Prelude.
Speaks: Camebridge Desktop Theatre.
OS: XP Pro 32 + SP 3.

Re: Unlock All Cores?

Hiya goranpaa,

Thanks for your reply.

The pc is for my brother I have included the rest of the specs in the picture below. He will be using it for gaming COD4/5 and GRID. I know that the motherboard has an 8 channel onboard sound chip built in. But he has these speakers would it still be worth getting an external sound card this one for example would it improve the sound quality much?
I guess the Core unlocking is not a must have as it will be fine for what he is going to use for. But then again it might be worth unlocking the cores for future proofing the system.

Feel free to comment and suggest any changes.

Re: Unlock All Cores?

Well, that Gigabyte mobo comes with the onboard Realtek ALC889A sound chip. Wich are actually pretty good.

But if your bro, are an Audiophile, with higher sound quality demands? Then I suggest this card:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...tid=11&subcat=

This is'nt too chabby either:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...odid=SC-002-AS

I don't think you want to list the XFX HD 4850 really. Mediocre cooling. Will run hot, as that XFX cooler is very similar to the ATI reference cooler. The extra 512mb on that XFX wont be of much use really as soon as you hit a monitor resoloution over 1024 x 1280 or 900 x 1400 wide screen res. This as the memory bus are only 256 megabit. That will cripple the memory performance over said resoloutions. 1 gb / 256 megabit cards are more or less a sales argument really.

This instead:

You're welcome.

Re: Unlock All Cores?

Hi goranpaa,

Thanks for your reply.

Do you recommend pay a bit extra and getting the 1GB version of the card above you linked to?

http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/1GB-S...VI-I-HDTV-HDCP

Would it make the system more future proof?

Re: Unlock All Cores?

I would only recommend the 1gb version if your bro are just going to run resoloutions at max 1024 x 1280 or 900 x 1400 wide screen res? Othervice, the 512mb version.

Re: Unlock All Cores?

Hi

Thanks for your reply.

He will be running at 1024/768 on his current monitor and in the future when he gets a new 24" monitor it will probably be running 1920/1080. So the 512mb should be ok?
