New Laptops

I read somewhere recently that the new laptops are designed to be used with Vista and do not work well with Win XP. Can anyone here confirm this please? I want to get a new laptop but it comes with Vista without the Vista Disc. I have the XP Disc so I would want to format the hard drive and install XP but from what I read, this is apparently not a good idea. Does anyone here know the answer to this?

Thanks in advance,

Re: New Laptops

first of all, vista requires much more memory and processing speed than win xp or win 7. So if your pc runs vista fine, win xp should run at max performance.

Re: New Laptops

Thank you, madman55,
The reason I asked was I had just read a post in the Miscellaneous thread where someone said they had a terrible time finding drivers for new laptops so they could run Win XP on the newer laptops.

Have you heard anything about this? It sounded pretty serious to me.

Re: New Laptops

if you order xp with your laptop, they should come with the right drivers. What laptop are you getting? i might know more about that company.

Re: New Laptops

I haven't decided yet for certain but I'm looking at a Toshiba with a dual processor and lots of drive space and RAM. I'm not a gamer so all I need it for is writing, research and email, etc.

I can confirm that I've read the same thing, not sure if it's true. Why do you need Windows on it?

Re: New Laptops

I've never used anything but Windows and I use Microsoft Office and several of its apps.
One day I might try Linux but I don't know anything about it. What other options are there besides Windows and Linux for a PC?

I'm not sure which laptop I'll buy just yet. I'm looking at a Toshiba machine that would satisfy my needs.

Thanks for your replies,

Re: New Laptops

That's a good question. I assumed that they all came with Operating Systems installed because that's how they display them in the stores and I believe that's how they sell them.

Yes, that's usually the case. Apparantly Windows DVD:s are no longer delivered with the purchase of pc:s from what I've seen due to OEM and because of this the price for the operating system get's cut down.

From those which like to have Linux installed, they have been unhappy that Windows comes preinstalled, so some companies have decided that they'll come without an operating system, but it's not as common.

Re: New Laptops

Over the past year we've bought about 30 or 40 laptops for users. Most newer HPs that come with Vista (or more recently Windows 7) do NOT provide XP drivers unless there is an XP OS option on the product. I.e. the product has both Vista and XP SKUs.

Meaning, if its not available with XP preinstalled, than they won't have drivers on their site. Now the kicker, you can use some XP drivers across models. HP does this with their EliteBooks, they'll have 3 dif versions, first two have XP option but the final doesn't yet they all share the same motherboard, network chipset, etc..

If you can, do some research on the model you are going to buy, see if its part of a line that has XP products on it.
