New AMD XP 1700 Install Problem
I recently bought an AMD Athlon XP 1700 and Shuttle Motherboard. When I installed them and installed all my peripherals, the system started up fine but when Windows ME started up and the system began to detect the new processor, my whole system locked up.
It appears to me that the processor and ram were installed fine along with the hard drive and other devices since when I boot from a windows 98 CD I am able to get a dos prompt and even access fdisk etc.
Would the best bet for getting my system up an running be to format my C drive and then install the Windows XP software and start from scratch. If so, is it possible to copy the entire contents of my C drive to another hard drive say my E drive. This way the system won't boot from it, but I will be able to retrieve my documents folder and other data and downloaded files?
Please help.
Thanks
P.s. my new system is an AMD Athlot XP 1700 with 512 of DDR 2100 Ram, on a shuttle motherboard. 2 hard drives with a total of 5 partitions accounting for drives c,d,e,f, and g. Windows is on C drive. Also have CD-RW and Superdisk floppy drive.

Trying to detect CPU? Sounds like some BS that ME does. If you have access to another OS (98, 2000, XP) try formatting and installing it.
Yes, you can back up the data files from your one hard drive to another before formatting, format the drive, then after installing OS you can restore it all. This is assuming there's enough room on the other drive to hold everything.

Disk Copy
shart965 wrote on 02-19-2002 10:38 AM:
what commands should I use if I have access to a Dos prompt to copy my entire C drive contents to a file folder on my E drive. It will be no problem with capacity. I tried to copy using copy c:*\* e:*.* and all I got was a few .exe and .app files copied, I actually want to copy the entire disk.
I tried FDISK but it would only allow me to copy my entire drive. I have a 100gig hard drive that has 4 partitions. I want to copy the 1st partition to the 4th patrition and then format the 1st partition.
Does this make sense?

The easiest way would be to take your harddrive to a friends house, do the copy there from windows, then continue on your home machine.
You'd have to use xcopy32 to copy the files; however it will truncate all your file names to six characters plus ~1. There isn't a way to get the file names back afterwards.

I've never used it, but this proggy should be able to do a extensive copy of a hard disk volume.
XXCOPY
Though, there should be a form of this file on your system allready, know as " xcopy.exe".
I've attached a text file with the optional funtions that the file has built into it. These may or may not be slightly different from your system since I'm running Win2K.
Just a couple ideas anyway.
(Good point Nova.)

Did you try a frsh install of ME or did you just upgrade everything and keep the same hard drive info?
Anyway, I would check the shuttle site for BIOS updates and FAQ's before doing anything drastic. There may be somekind of BIOS issue with your board and the new CPU. Maybe even the 100GB hard drive since it's a new product.

windows has a tough time seeing HD over 80gig i would re-partition to a 80 and 20 gig sections if u got a 100gig HD.
but it sounds like its more of a bios problem u HAVE to set ur bios configuration before u do anything else.

Very good point.
If anything, at least set c: as a 4 gig partition and deal with the rest later on.
Also consider setting the bios see the drive as "LARGE" and then manually input the values displayed on the drive itself. Then format and install.

formatting issue
The hard drive has already been partitioned into 4 partitions. What is the easiest way to set the bios. Also, I have tried several times to copy my 1 physical drive info to my second physical drive and the system gives me problems. I also am unable to use the format command when I boot using a windows 98 disk. What are the exact commands for formating 1 partition, this would make it easier to just erase the windows program and then install a new version of XP.
Thanks

Find an old windows 98 boot disk. Copy "Format.exe" to his floppy from a windows CD ROM.
Boot the system up with the floppy in place.
as the boot options are displayed Select the command prompt "shift and f5" in think.
This will bring to to command prompt. type a:
A: will appear
Type Fdisk or format and go to work.

I know you already have fixed the problem, but I went through something similar when I Installed my xp1900 and shuttle ak31a.
Im assuming you did this without making any prior changes to the OS.
Mine never got to the lock up point, when win2k was booting, it noticed that the CPU and the ide controller were different, so I brought me to a blue screen and the blue screen said put the old stuff back on, and then add the new stuff.....well It just wasnt going to work, so I formatted and started from scratch.....much easier.
Luckily I had an image handy of my old system. I loaded the image to another partition, and pulled the files that I wanted/needed.
