Playstation 2 (hardware)

I'm not sure that this it the right Forum but,

I am having serious problems with the reading of disks by my Playstation 2. I have herd that it is a fairly common problem but know no way on how to fix it. Five out of five of my freinds who have a PS2 have had this problem with mine being the worst and most common (the only thing that it will play are a select few PS2 DVD games).

First loss: DVD movies
My freinds and I were watching the movie when it started to skip, then skiped to a stop. I took the DVD out cleaned it off (flawless) put it in and got on unreadable disk. NO DVDs from then on.

Next: PS2 CD, PS1 CD, Audio CD,
I was board one day and decided to throw in an old game (called ICO which is PS2 CD). ICO did not work, I recived an "unreadable disk" error. Subsequently i lost the ablility to play the CD format.

Right now:
I thought that I could only play PS2 DVD games because Metal Gear works fine. So brought Tekken tag down to the house to get an a** beating when gasp... Tekken was unreadable.

MGS is the only thing that will work (though I do live it).

EB said that it will cost $150 to send it to Sony to get it fixed. They only cost $199. I have no Idea on how to fix it.

Thx for looking at the long post and for any feedback

Have you tried putting a cleaning cd in your DVD drive (assuming they have one for it)

There's one specifically for the PS2. Only $7.99.

What if that does not work? Is this a common problem?

If that doesn't work, then send it off to get worked on or buy a new one. It sounds like your laser lens is either dirty or damaged.. and from my reasearch, yes, this seems to be a common-enough problem. It happens especially when you leave the PS2 on for long amounts of time -- the disk spins continuously until you shut off the power. This can be hard on the lens.

thought so

Kind of figured that I'd have to buy a new one thx anyway. I don't know much about the PS2 hardware but since I have to buy a knew one I'll probobly open this one up. Would it be posible to jimmy rig a new (external computer) CD-ROM from a computer to the PS2?
Kind of a stupid question , but I was just wondering.

The possible problem is this: The belt that controls the DVD Lens Movement has moved the lends over too far to the end and now it is stuck or in an extreme case, the belt has come off.

You can send it into sony and they will fix it for $60 or you can just buy a whole new PS2. If you bother them enough on emails, they will fix it for free.

PS2s have cheap manufacturing quality. I am personally on my 3rd PS2. And this one is having problems with DVD movies already, so I won't be surprised if it dies soon.

My advice: if you buy a new one, buy an extended warranty from somewhere.

Oh, and you won't be able to hook up a different drive to the PS2. The PS2 uses a custom connector, and most likely custom drive mechanics as well.
