Article on stealing WiFi

http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20060622-7111.html

It seems the consequences for stealing WiFi are becoming much more severe.

Re: Article on stealing WiFi

Interesting. I'll remember to buy a small capachino if I ever get a laptop and hang out at a Wi-Fi cafe. In the meantime I only need a wired network for myself because the PCs are right next to each other. My lady friend has switched to a wired network from a wireless one because some neighbors' kids were using it to download porn and get around their parents security measures.

If she's capable of finding out exactly what they're doing with her wireless connection she should be capable enough to prevent it.

Re: Article on stealing WiFi

i dont know if its just me, but I could always tell if someone was using my wireless connection before I enabled MAC filtering.....i just looked in the DHCP clients table or w.e....not to mention that if my computer was turned off, and the WLAN led was blinking, someone was using it.

anyway, thats good. ppl shouldn't steal.

Re: Article on stealing WiFi

It's not merely the ability to tell someone else is logged on, but more specifically the accusation that the individual in question knows precisely what the unauthorised user is accessing.

Re: Article on stealing WiFi

Jen used to do tech support for Boche & Lomb, so she knew what she was doing. The problem was that she spent too little on her wireless equipment because of her high interest mortgage after surviving cancer. The protection technology it came with didn't work some of the time. As it is she sold her laptop because she was desperate for the money, so a wired network for two PCs in the same room works just fine for her too.
