Shaw ISP and Linksys Router

Hi, I just moved and have a new ISP. However I cannot find any information on setting up my router with my ISP, Shaw. I emailed them a few days ago but still havent recieved a reply and am a little antsy setting up my home network.

since it is a cable company (and cable internet connection), I used the "Automatic Configuration - Direct DHCP" setting on my Linksys Router. However I could not get an ip, from the DHCP, or any sort of internet connection.

I then changed to a static ip connection.
I used the DNS server from here: http://support.shaw.ca/troubleshooting/dnsservers.htm
for "Static DNS" 1 and 2 for my area. I then grabbed some information from my neighbour (next door) who has the same provider.
gateway: 24.79.152.1
subnetmask : 255.255.252.0 (i thought the 3rd number here was a little odd...)
i used an ip similar to theirs, but I will not post either of ours for security reasons. (yes it is within range >0 and <256)

I did get a connection, and my laptop over wireless worked fine. however my main desktop saw the router, but my router didnt seem to want to give it a connection.
So I messed aroudn with it and my laptop no longer works either.

Reading this page I shouldnt have a problem using the DHCP setting I first tried.

If someone else ahs shaw and linksys router, please tell me if I am doing anythign wrong, or what you did to get connected.

You're not going to have any luck using a static IP. You have to pay for that. Keep it on DHCP. You should call your ISP. As long as they have your username and pass in their server. You should be able to use it however ur router has to be using your user and pass and be set to DHCP. Sounds like a one hour phone call fix to me. And try not to let on that you know anything about puters, it will make it easier

I'm not sure wether to take this offensively or laugh.
DHCP = no user names or passwords.

And yes I do know quite a bit about computer, however this problem makes zero sense, as I have read and followed multiple instructions, thus why I am here.

And no, I do not have to pay extra for a static ip with my ISP. Actaully, once my modem is assigned an IP that is attached to the MAC address on my ISP's server, my IP does become in essence a static IP. Thats why if you have any experience with Shaw, you will know its one of the things you need to do is to get the MAC address of your modem, and tell your router to clone itself with that IP in order to work properly.

Aswell, if you knew much abotu shaw, they do not provide any tehcnical support help with setting up routers, as they would rather sell you a second IP to tie to your account.



Anyone with any actual experience with setting up a router with shaw, using a linksys router?

Just for an update, I have fixed this problem.

For thoes with similar problems.
Shaw provides you with up 2 two IP address, and since they are tied with your MAC address for your computer, if you plug in two different products with different mac address, then you will not recieve a third, and have a problem conencting like I did. (I plugged in my desktop, and another dayI plugged in my laptop.

So what I did, is I took one of my computers (my desktop) and hooked it up to the modem directly, which I did before.
I then went to Start -> Run
typed in: cmd
this brings up a dos shell window.

in the dos window, type in: ipconfig /all
This command gives you details of how your computer is conencted to the internet.

What you are looking for is your host name, ip, dns, default gateway, mac address (or 'physical address'), and I beleive that is all...
Now keep the dos shell open, or do a print screen, or copy down all/most of the information.
When you are setting up your linksys router, do the normal, put 192.168.1.1 into your web browser to access the setup for your router. 'admin' is the defualt password (with no username)

I put my connection as a static IP.
Then you will copy the information from the dos shell into the misc. empty boxes.
Host name, ip address, DNS (there should be 2 of these), and default gateway. Obviously hit save, to save the new settings.

Now goto the top and goto mac cloning. (this is the kicker).
Here make sure that mac cloning is enabled. and the mac address should be that of what was said int he dos shell. If it is not, (maybe you are on another computer?) just take what was in the dos schell that was listed as "physical address" and input it into the boxes.

Save, wait about 30 seconds for everything to take place, and then "BAM!" you have your router going.
