Angry Unfamiliar Program File - NewDotNet

Hi all,

I have ad-aware and I just d/l and ran Spybot. Spybot has picked up something it cannot delete but says shouldn't be there. It's in my program files under the file name:

NewDotNet

I tried to send it to the recycle bin but it says it's being used by another person/program. It's not in "add/remove programs" either. Does anyone know how to get rid of this? Is it in fact harmful?

Thanks!

Try following the directions here: http://www.pchell.com/support/savenow.shtml According to Google, NewDotNet is some type of tool bar or a program that is automatically installed with a tool bar - otherwise known as "Foistware" because they foisted it upon you.

Re: Unfamiliar Program File - NewDotNet

Another option that I didn't think of earlier is to go to the advanced settings of Spybot S&D and select the option to have it run a scan at the next boot of the computer and then reboot the machine. This will cause Spybot to run before the completion of Windows boot so it can remove things that might otherwise be running or connected to something that's running. Just be aware of the fact that such scans are usually way off on the amount of time left for the scan, so it may say "0:00" remaining while it still needs to run for 3 more minutes!

usually running a scanner in safe mode will allow you to remove such trash.

Also, Spybot has the feature to scan on the next boot (found in the options and usually asks you if you wish to do this when it cannot delete all the problems).

Re: Unfamiliar Program File - NewDotNet

I prefer the paranoid approach. Format, reinstall, and learn how to secure your machine properly. 30 minutes spent learning about Internet security > 5 different spyware removing programs. Besides, it's a losing battle depending on a spyware removing program. The malware authors will always have a leg up no matter what. Hell they tend to crack MS patches just hours after their release. And there is plenty of spyware out there that scanners cannot pick up yet. Some of it behaves more virus-like really. And if you've been hit with a rootkit then no amount of protection can help you.

It doesn't hurt to have spyware removing programs, but nothing comes close to securing your PC as much as doing a little homework.

Re: Unfamiliar Program File - NewDotNet

I'd shy away from thier own removal tool and use spybot's.

-----------------------------
Crap you need if you don’t have it already:
Firefox (Better browser)
Spyware Blaster (Prevent Spyware from Installing)
Ad-Aware (delete spyware)
