My dad has an old Toshiba Satellite laptop with something ridiculous like 133mhz processor and 128MB RAM w/ Windows 98. He has a network card in the side of it and he's trying to set up DSL. He's put these filters on all of our phones and he set the modem up. The modem is showing a signal from the ISP and the power light is on as well. However, it's not able to communicate with the computer. The way it's currently set us is like this:
Modem leads to the phone line. The RJ-45 cable leads from the modem to
this adapter which goes into the laptop. Now, when we connect the 3COM adapter to the computer, the hardware box pops up so we know that this adapter is recognized by the computer. But there's no internet connection whatsoever. He has no firewall and there's nothing else I can think of that could be preventing the connection, but then again, last time I dealt with Win 98 was LONG ago and I'm used to XP's improved plug-n-playish capability.
He called Earthlink tech support and they thought it was a bad cable that they sent him but I'm having a hard time believing that. Thanks for your help.
