Windows XP Desktop going nuts! (HELP)

Yesterday my PC was running fine and I was downloading some free programs, out of no where when I refreshed my desktop it turned blue (defualt backround) ! I didnt know what happened so I tried changing it, but the wallpapers were darkened, so if i clicked something nothing happened! After some help from a friends I got my desktop back together but I still have one problem!

The default color is still on my icons.

Re: Windows XP Desktop going nuts! (HELP)

If you mean that your desktop is back to normal except for the little horizontal space under your icons where the name of the icon is, try this.

Right click on My Computer. Click on Properties, then click on Advanced.

Click on Settings. There are four places where you have the option of placing a dot.

Put the dot in the first spot next to Let Windows choose what’s best for my computer.

Then click Apply and OK

I had the same problem (assuming we’re talking about the same thing) and this worked for me.

Good luck.

Re: Windows XP Desktop going nuts! (HELP)

I'm surprised my suggestion didn't work. It worked for me. Have you tried changing the picture on your desktop to see if it still happens with another image? Might be worth a try.

Yea, I've tried almost everything. Is there anyway you can reset your picture to the way it was when you first had the computer? (Besides System restore?)

Re: Windows XP Desktop going nuts! (HELP)

Can't help you there. Ususally by now I'd have done a system restore if nothing else had worked.

Have you tried right clicking on Desktop and choosing Themes Tab and then changing the picture from in there?

Re: Windows XP Desktop going nuts! (HELP)

Yep tried that just now, nothing changed. I heard system restores make your compute run slower then before? Is that true?

Grr this sucks. My parents gave me this computer for christmas and it's messed up already.

Re: Windows XP Desktop going nuts! (HELP)

Okay, I looked again and found the place you need to put a checkmark.

Right click on My Computer and select the advanced tab.

In mine I put the dot in the fourth hole – Custom

If you have a checkmark beside Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop it should solve the problem. If I remove that checkmark I get the blue horizontal space around the type under my icons. As soon as I replace the checkmark the blue goes away and I’m back to normal.

The only item in the whole list of Performance Options on my system that doesn’t have a checkmark beside it is the last one: Use visual styles on windows and buttons.

Hope this helps,

Still didn't work. I un-ticked it yet the backround on the text of my icons was still blue and ugly.

Re: Windows XP Desktop going nuts! (HELP)

Sorry it didn't work. It woks on my machine. I guess if I were in your shoes I'd do a system resore slecting a date that is fairly recent- two to three days ago.

I've never had a problem with my computer running slower after using System Restore and I've used it a lot.

Good luck and let us know how you make out.

Re: Windows XP Desktop going nuts! (HELP)

Like I said, I use System Restore fairly often and I've never lost anything. I always have to re-run any spyware scans I've done recently but otherwise I've never had a problem.

Also, if it doesn't work, it's completely reversible so there's no great risk involved.
