Brand new to computers-need basic training

Have been looking for basic site to answer basic questions about computer use. I have Vista & pals dont know it so are no help. Is this forum too advanced for me ? I'm still learning terms & spend half my time on google search trying to educate myself. No written manuals come w\ computer as all have gone "green" & you must find answers from within computer itself which means knowing enough to ask "intelligent" questions! For instance, been trying to discover why spell check didn't work when I clicked arrow after it--today discovered by accident I must click on words themselves & then the darned thing worked fine. Simple little operating things like that are so frustrating to the "newbie". I also find many answers use such technical terms they're of no help.Any suggestions on the best way for newbie to educate oneself are appreciated--my son says he had to learn by "trial & error" & that's where I find myself. Looking forward to hearing from some "understanding" members. Thanx!

Re: Brand new to computers-need basic training

Well, I'm going to assume that you're basically the newest of the new and first get an idea of what exactly about the computer you want to know.

So, let's start with this. Hardware refers to the actual physical components of the computer. Your monitor, your mouse, your keyboard, your speakers, the PC and all the parts inside. That's hardware.

Software is the applications and programs you're using on the computer. The web browser, the text editor, the spreadsheet applications, the games and even the operating system (the very thing that's supporting all of this and making that nice little taskbar on the bottom for you) are software.

So, what are you looking to learn more about? Also, are there any tasks in particular you need help with figuring out how to do or are you just looking to learn more in general?

they make them fairly easy to use anymore. once u hit that start button, you're on your way to doing great things. Any specifics of what you want to use your computer for? and we'll gladly help you.

PC's for Dummies got me started years ago. Explanations in everyday language, then

use the forum for clarification if required.

I used to use the Net Lingo Online Dictionary to explain technical terms.

It's a good source. I still use it occasionally.
