DirectX 9.0 and Games

So ya, ever since I installed DirectX9.0b various games, namely Warcraft III and the Halo Demo, havent been running. It says that its unable to initialize DirectX. I've read many thread on these boards about problems with 9.0 and tried solutions suggested in them to no avail. Im about ready to reformat my computer to fix the problem and was hoping any last minute suggestions would be able to save me from the work. So far i have updated my video drivers, tried reinstalling directx, defragging, running scandisk. All sorts of stuff. Reinstalling the games and patches for them. This is my DxDiag, sorry its so big but ya. copy paste.

One thing to note, it worked fine before 9.0 it worked, which was 8.1. and the errors in direct3d tests.

also, i have another question. I dont know if any of you have used the "blizzard video tester" which gives you a bunch of resolution options and then will attempt to open a screen using either DirectX or OpenGL to open them. now the fact that you can choose openGL is what confused me because i figured that all the blizzard games probably used DirectX.
So my question is: is there a way to setup Warcraft III to run with OpenGL instead of directX?

If you are haveing a "Failed to intialize DirectX" problem with HALO, it is almost certainly refresh rate related. A couple of things you can do:
1) Fix your refresh rate to 60Hz (Win2K and XP should already do that by default, but many people have unlocked the refresh rate with various utilities available)
2) Pick a suitable refresh rate and through desktop properties, settings, advanced, select refresh rate override if your video card supports this (mine is nVIDIA). Fix the refresh rate to one you have chosen.
3) Add a vidmode command line parameter to HALO, e.g. -vidmode 1024,768,85 (where 85 is a chosen refresh rate).
4) Check your monitor refresh rate settings in desktop properties, settings, advanced.

Fool around a bit with various settings and you should be able to get it to work.

nope, the eventual solution was to reformat to rid myself of dx9.0 and get 8.1 and some really old nvidia drivers, 40.71 i have yet to try to update to 9.0 dx drivers again, id like to, but i dont wanna mess around with it more. (reformatting) i suppose i could do it this weekend, if it works, then great, if it dioesnt, then i get to reformat again, yay.

You can actually run Warcraft 3 with open GL, though this doesn't seem to work for the world editor... Create a shortcut to war3.exe, open its properties and add -opengl in the target box (after the quotes).

WC3 will look hideous after this, but at least you'll be able to play. Good luck fixing the rest of your problems... If I'm not mistaken, this error also applies to just about every game that needs direct3d.
