Cool Latest game specs

I feel like I've gotten behind on some of the latest games and hence, their system requirements. I'm back to shopping around to build a new rig. So what are some of the latest games that require some of the latest hardware? I already have specs for WoW, Doom 3, and Oblivion.

Re: Latest game specs

Quake 4, Far Cry, are a couple. Oblivion still has pretty high requirements.

So if you build somethin' that goes beyond those games, you'll have yourself a decent rig (like mine). :-P

CoolerMaster Centurion 534
Asus P5B Deluxe (w/ WiFi)
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600

250GB 7200 RPM SATA Maxtor

Re: Latest game specs

If you want a decently future proof gaming rig. Build one based on a Core 2 Duo E6400 or E6600 cpu or faster.

You may also wanna get a power supply, minimum 500W and at least 30Ampere on the + 12V rail(s)

And don't be cheap on the psu. Get one from the reknown brands. Buying a cheap, generic one will come back to haunt you sooner or later.

Good psu brands: Be quiet! Black power, Corsair, Enermax, Fortron Source, PC Power & Cooling, Seasonic.

Unfortunatly, Antec psu's is'nt what they used to be, since they have started to use cheaper components.

Good Intel core 2 duo mobos: Asus P5B / P5B De Luxe, Gigabyte DS3 and DS 4.

If you need a new case? Get one with really good cooling (120mm fans).

Good cases. Antec P180 / P 182, Antec Solo, Antec Nine hundred, CoolerMaster Centurion 534 and Stacker 830. Gigabyte Aurora, NZXT Apollo, Thermaltake Kandalf and Armor for ex.

2 gig of RAM or more is also a good choise. Especially if you go Windows Vista.

-----------------------------
Case: Antec P180B + 2 X 120mm Noctua fans.
Psu: Corsair TX 750W
Mobo: Gigabyte P35-DS3 P.
Cpu: E6850 3.6GHz
Cooler: Scythe Ninja.
Video cards: 2 X Sapphire HD 4870.
W.D. Caviar 640 mb SATA 2 Black.
Sound: Auzentech X FI Prelude.
Speaks: Camebridge Desktop Theatre.
OS: XP Pro 32 + SP 3.

Re: Latest game specs

Also, if you're building a whole rig from the ground up it's best to either get a case that comes without a power supply or to buy 1 with a power supply that is a good one. Be careful not to buy a case/PSU combo based too much upon price. Sometimes the case may be an excellent one, but then they include a cheap PSU.

Note that even though Antec makes excellent cases, they're not as good at making PSUs as they once were. Avoid generics if you're serious about making a good gaming rig. I now treat Antec's PSUs with suspicion and even as "generic" since I posted another thread on here a couple weeks ago with a pic of a floppy wire that burned its insulation off. That makes two Antec power supplies that turned out to have problems since my first one had incorrect voltages.

Re: Latest game specs

Thanks for the responses.

Browsing through the forum, I see a lot of new stuff that has come out since my last post on building a rig. I've been going into research mode. I'll probably wait a long while to get Vista, as I did with XP.

Re: Latest game specs

Get an Intel E6600 cpu and a good core 2 duo mobo (Asus P5B or Gigabyte DS 3 or DS 4) + 2 gig of nice DDR 2. 800 RAM.

And if you aint going Vista? Then, a 7900GS, 7950GT or Radeon X1950Pro is a great choise for a videocard.

Case: Antec P180B + 2 X 120mm Noctua fans.
Psu: Corsair TX 750W
Mobo: Gigabyte P35-DS3 P.

Cooler: Scythe Ninja.

Re: Latest game specs

Myself and my wallet would like to stick with AMD. I was looking at these: http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16819103052 and http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16819103053

I'm currently searching around for a Mobo. My budget is $1000. I don't NEED a new rig, but would very very much like one.

Re: Latest game specs

Here is good rig:
(good s.939 mobo's is very hard to find nowadays)

PSU:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817194009

Case:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811119104

Extra Fan:

Cpu:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103749

RAM:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820134125

Videocard:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...2E16814125045R

HDD:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148142

DVD combo:

Extras:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835185125

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16899888207

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835100009

Total of: 855 Bucks. So you could afford a Geforce 7950GT instead of the 7900GS if you want? Will cost you 40 bucks more.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130074

You could also get this psu instead of the Enermax. And get some more juice:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139001

It's modular, so you wont have to have so many cables in the case. Just the ones you use for the moment.

Will make the cable routing easier. And less risk of the cables disturbing the air flow from front to back in the case.

Another 35 bucks added to the price.

Case: Antec P180B + 2 X 120mm Noctua fans.

Re: Latest game specs

As always, thanks Goranpaa.

Should I go with another socket? I know AM2 is newer, but from the sounds of it it's already short-lived.
Technology is going way too quickly these days.

Re: Latest game specs

If there had been any good socket 939 motherboards that would be somewhat easy to get. I would have said,"stay with s.939!" But the s.939 AMD mobos that is good, is very hard to find.

But AM2 is almost as cheap nowadays. And still have some nice mobos that is pretty easy to find for that socket.

Also, you will allready have DDR 2 RAM if you go AM2 now. Could make the next cpu / mobo upgrade somewhat cheaper, if or when you go Intel Core 2 Duo or whatever it will be ? Next time you upgrade.

I also got the impression you just wanted to go AMD?

As for the "future proofing" it's max 2 years in the gaming rig world. Especially the videocards is short lived. I long for the old days. When a rig would last up to 3 - 4 years, before beeing a dinosaur.

But back to your upgrade. You could get this Core 2 duo rig for a good price:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115004

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128044

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835186134

With the case, the Enermax psu and the Gigabyte 7900GS, the Kingston RAM , the hd and DVD from the previous list + the Belkin antistatic wriststrap, the extra Aerocool fan and the Ceramique paste for a total of 930 bucks.

And I still think that is the best rig for the money... more "future proof" too.
The E6400 with that AC Freezer 7 Pro cooler. Will make it possible to oc the E6400 to about 2.6 - 2.8GHz maybe more? This, as the Core 2 Duo cpu's are cool runnning, and fantastic overclockers. The Gigabyte, 7900GS with the Zalman cooler should overclock well too.

But even at stock speed. The E6400 is one fast cpu!

But now I leave it up to you to decide. And there are others here that may have other upgrade tips that is better than mine.

You're welcome.
