Starcraft Error

I cannot find a solution to my problem on the web anywhere. Any help would be awesome.

I have this error between 2 and ten minutes after opening Starcraft and then it quits to the desktop:

"The exception unknown software exception 0xc0000005 occurs in the application at location 0x0040ac96"

The second string of numbers is usually different.

I tried updating my graphics card driver, didnt work.
I tried reinstalling the game, didint work.
I am using Windows Vista

Thanks!

Re: Starcraft Error

Not intending on sending you away from here, blizzard's support website should have a database where you can type the error code for starcraft and it should give you a solution to the problem. Not that this is common or so, but back when i first started playing diablo 2 lod, i started having the same problem sometimes and it would just quit to my desktop. Couldnt figure out what the problem was, but if you give me your compute specs, i can see if it has anything to do with your pc or your os. Hope that helps.

Re: Starcraft Error

Thanks madman55

Heres my specs:

Windows Vista Home Premium (64-Bit), service pack 2
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E8400 @ 3.00GHz
4 GB RAM
GeForce 9600 GT 512MB
DirectX version 11.0

I read something about someone having a problem like this and they installed Chaoslauncher for starcraft and it worked. But i downloaded it and it warns me that theres a chance that Blizzard would invalidate my CD KEY. Any ideas?
Thanks!

Re: Starcraft Error

Have you tried running it in compatibility mode?

Right click on the shortcut to the game.
Choose "Properties"
Click the "Compatibility" tab.
Check "Run this program in compatibility mode for:"
In the drop-down box I would try Windows XP first.

The error you are experiencing seems to be associated more with your specific system than the game itself. So searching for that particular error message will not yield too many results.

Your system is fine. The fact that you are running windows vista makes the software a bit difficult to run as it was designed for windows 95/95, 2000, and ME (millenium edition) That should be taken care of with an update. About that program you found, It is not recommended to use any third party software with the game as it can get you in trouble with blizzard. They have a solution to these problems. When searching for that error message in their support section, if you cannot see it, e-mail their support address (tech support on the phone is to long of a wait)

Re: Starcraft Error

Fadedmaster, i tried compatability mode. Didnt help.

Madman: you said vista with an update should take care of the problem. What kind of update?

I deleted the chaoslauncher.

Do you think you could give me a URL for the 'error message database' on Blizzard support? I was looking but couldnt find it. If you dont respond i guess ill just email Blizzard Support like you said.
Thanks.

Re: Starcraft Error

Try running it as an administrator. I had Windows Vista and now have Windows 7 and I used to get the same problem but once I started running the game as an administrator it started working everytime. You can even change the advanced settings in the properties menu to always open as an administrator. Hope this helps.

Re: Starcraft Error

About your graphics driver: to my own experience it can help by using the nVidia driver which is provided by XFX or the Gainward website depending on your specific model of your graphics card. Have you tried this?

-----------------------------
Debian Lenny (Linux kernel 2.6.26)
Chieftec fulltower
QDI PlatiniX, P4 @ 2.8
CPU cooler: Arctic Cooling 92mm
2x512MB 400mhz DDR Kingston
320GB 7200RPM S-ATA WD
500GB 7200RPM S-ATA WD
80GB 7200RPM EIDE WD
Creative Sound Blaster Audigy ZS2
Gainward Bliss 7800GS 256MB GDDR3
650w CorsairTX

Re: Starcraft Error

Thanks JCrew for the reply. I have tried running it under administrator, it has not worked.

Khelben - i have not tried XFX or Gainworld website driver updates. Ive never heard of it. I am currently looking into it.
I have an Nvidia GeForce 9600 GT with Vista 64 bit.
Do you know how to get the XFX driver?
Thanks.

Re: Starcraft Error

You need to register your serial number from your graphics card with XFX at the time you create your account with them. Then you will be able to access XFX nVidia drivers from their webpage: XFX Support Central.

Re: Starcraft Error

thanks. i tried this, but when i put my S/N in, it said "serial number not found, please enter parts code". Where can i find the products parts number? I looked all over the card and could not find any that matched anything on the list.
Any ideas?

Im really running out of things to try. I contacted blizzard and did everything they suggested to try, nothing helped. I think maybe i should just get Windows 7. But not sure that would fix it or not.

Re: Starcraft Error

Sounds strange.

No, I'm convinced that going for Windows 7 won't help you in this. Are you sure you entered the correct serial number and are you sure every character and number you entered was correct?

Re: Starcraft Error

im sure the SN was correct, checked it many times. It is very strange. And i dont know where i can find the parts number. I see a code that says "P/N:" before it, and i guess this is the parts number, but i cannot find it on the list on the XFX website.

It never happens with any other game, just Starcraft. I have to swap out my new computer with my old one when my friends want to play online. So that gets annoying.

I guess its either my graphics card or memory - if its not vista.
