clearing registry cache?

I am running XP home and I would like to disable/ remove the cache of previously visited sites.

(yeah, yeah...what would my mother say...)

The obvious stuff in IE like tool/internetoptions/clear cookies/history/ content /autocomplete/etc...I have a grip on.

I have been informed that windows keeps a record regardless of wiping the cache in the registry.

Recently, I stumbled across one of the places in the registry that Micro$oft is storing your favorites and the places you've been at. Basically, there are two keys that store this information. This key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre
ntVersion\Explorer\UserAssist\{5E6AB780-7743-11CF-A12B-00AA004AE837}\Count

There will be a series of binary sub-keys called HRZR_EHACVQY:%pfvqy6%\ These are actually your favorites cached in a encrypted form

and this key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre
ntVersion\Explorer\UserAssist\{75048700-EF1F-11D0-9888-006097DEACF9}\Count

There will be a series of binary sub-keys called HRZR_EHACVQY:%pfvqy2%\ These are actually the sites you've visited, nicely cached in a encrypted form .

Has anybody ever tried to to out right delete the history from the registry?

I'm not so concerned about the favorties as I am about the history.

Am I asking for a disaster by messing around with these?

I've run a few cleaning programs like shredder, tracks etc...but the info still seems to be there.

Any help or sage advice is muchly appreciated.

You've been doing some homework. And probably more than most of us are really concerned about.

If you really want to be sure every thing is gone, simply delete your "Profile".
  • Logon with a different account that is an Administrator on your computer.
Bring up the System Properties applet.
Under the User Profiles tab, delete the offending profile.
Logon with your old account and a new profile is automatically created.
Be aware, this will clear everything for that account. Including My Documents, Desktop, Wallpapers and your Bookmarks and such.

This may not be what you wanted. If not, then you're going to have to figure out the details yourself.
