large blank space in add/remove programs

is it normal for winxp to have a large space in the add remove programs screen????.... for example in the sort by name view it will show maybe 4-5 programs then there is a huge blank space. about the hight if the monitor that i have to scroll through to see the rest of the programs.
at first i thought it was the updates that werent shown but when i click show updates it adds them to the bottom.
if its not normal what could cause it?

Re: large blank space in add/remove programs

mlbz420,

Nope not normal. Probably entries left from some removed spyware, or botched installs by the same stuff. You have winXP? You can remove them in the registry.

it was from an aim95.exe download (Adware.Wheaterbug.A)which is now since removed
from what i can recall it has ben that way since the first time i opened the add/remove programs menu. i only became suspicious when i installed it on another comp and it wasnt like that.......

Re: large blank space in add/remove programs

Guys, I've had the same "big blank space in Add/Remove Programs screen" problem and it ain't spyware.

It's a hosed 'DisplayIcon' in a registry entry in

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

The value for DisplayIcon should be a path to an icon file, plus an optional comma-followed-by-a-number. If the optional number is -1, you'll get the big blank. Just search through the key mentioned above for "DisplayIcon", checking the value of each. If you find a ",-1" in any of them, remove the comma and the -1 and you'll be OK

Re: large blank space in add/remove programs

Um, one more thing. My experience is from one program, Autodesk Land Desktop 2004.

It's possible that a "DisplayIcon" value botched in some other way could screw it up too. You could just delete any suspect DisplayIcon with no harm done... Windows would just have to decide for itself what icon to display.

Finally. I had have this same problem a quite long time already. Problem was caused AutoCAD 2002. I removed that -1 and the separator comma and it fixed the add/remove window. Thanks for the advice.
