Looking for a good, free firewall?

It's not easy to find a good firewall nowadays, that you can handle easily, without beeing some kind of firewall expert. And it gets even harder, when trying to find a free one. Zone Alarm whas good before. But now I think ZA have become a mayor pain to use. And Sygate Personal firewall, that whas my favourite fw, is gone, since Symantec (Norton) took over Sygate. No free firewalls there!

I have used Sygate for quite a while. But now I begin to feel it's a little too old to feel really safe. So I started to look, for a new one. Hopefully just as nice as my old trusty Sygate. And after some searching, I found Comodo Personal firewall, that also is free. I have used it for little over a week now. And I really like it. It's very easy to use for us that wants a problem free setup and no hazzle. Here is some of it's features:

* Recognizes over 10,000 applications!
* Doesn't need configuring!
* Cannot be shut down by Trojans or viruses!
* Recognized by Windows XP SP2

And from what I have read, what other users think of it. They are just as positive to it as I am.

If you wanna try it?

Re: Looking for a good, free firewall?

Yes to both. It could have been an isolated incident. It probably won't happen again once I reboot. I'll keep you posted on that.

Re: Looking for a good, free firewall?

What other protection do you have loaded on your PC? Just curious as I 'm thinking of unloading my Norton. I know you mention Comodo for your Firewall, what about Anti Virus for email, Anti Spyware etc etc. I know you folks had mentioned Norton causing problems and I do believe this to be true. Do you turn off the Windows Firewall with Comodo running? I know I have my Windows Firewall off with Norton running.

Cheers

Re: Looking for a good, free firewall?

I agree. I also tried the latest ZA for fun. But it was a mayor pain. I did uninstall it after 30 minutes of usage. Pity, as ZA firewalls used to be really good.

But try Comodo. It's probably one of the best free fw out there.

Just be patient in the beginning. It asks a lot of questions, trying to find out about your stuff out on the net and wich you wanna block.

Norton and McAffee virus scanners are pigs when it comes to system resources. If you're looking for a good commercial virus scanner that's lightweight, nod32 is great.

As for software firewalls, I think the windows firewall is enough IF you have a router already. If not, a better software firewall as mentioned is a good idea.

No problems.

I use Avast free for antivirus together with the Comodo fw. And then Spybot, Ad Aware SE wich is free and Ewido, wich is AVG's free antispy. So I'm pretty covered lol.

Now and then I run Bitdefender on line and Trend Mico Housecall. The last 2 are on line virus scanners.

I'd suggest not using the Tea Timer function of Spybot though. It is slow to learn and often doesn't remember what you tell it even if you DO check the box so it is SUPPOSED to remember. Otherwise I use the same stuff.
