Illegal disc error with NERO
So I haven't burned a disc in a long time data nor audio but I tried to burn a word document the other day and it gave me this weird error I've never seen before. I've been using the same version of nero for a while so I'm guessing it was some kind of windows update or lack of firmware update that is giving me this error.
Here's the log of the error:

Re: Illegal disc error with NERO
Try getting an update for Nero & installing that. If no updates are available for your version, just do a re-install. this may sort the problem out.

Re: Illegal disc error with NERO
Also, do you have a drive that is designated as the "F" drive? If not, sometimes programs get confused if they are trying to search a drive that doesn't exist. If this is happening with Nero, then most likely kestrel1 is correct and a re-install of the software might fix it.

Re: Illegal disc error with NERO
I tried reinstalling and I got the same error...
So I installed with an older version [ Nero 6.6, the first one I used was Nero 7 ultra ]
I still get the same error. I think it has to do with my DMA being off... Again, I have no idea why I have no primary ide or secondary ide in my device manager...
Here is the error log with the 6.6 version:

Re: Illegal disc error with NERO
Many CD or DVD burners are not able to use DMA, so I doubt that's the problem. If the drives aren't appearing in the device manager that might be the problem. Try going to Windows Update and clicking Custom to see if anything is listed. Also what brand of media are you trying to burn to? I've gotten some pretty weird errors occuring when I've used cheap discs, so I now buy only higher quality ones.

Re: Illegal disc error with NERO
I'm installing absolutely everything that's in my windows update right now... Around 11 things which are all either security updates or something that isn't related to my problem...
I'm using pretty cheap [ I think ] TDK discs... Came in a 100 pack... Thing is I've burned on these cds before, it's not like it's a new pack or anything. I've tried burning one song, or one small word file and neither works.
This is frustrating =\
The thread that I found on google that seems to help the most is: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/217392
The only other thing I can think of is maybe a firmware upgrade but I cannot find any for my burner... MITSUMI CR-4804TE

Re: Illegal disc error with NERO
If you do a google search for the firmware, you get many results. There only appears to be one firmware version available (3.0d)
have a look here:

A firmware upgrade may help, but it could be the CD's. Have you tried any others?

Re: Illegal disc error with NERO
....
I tried to update the firwmare but I am totally lost as to how to do it... I can't get winflash to work.. I tried following the directions on this site:
http://www.mitsumi.com/enduser/win.html
And no I have not tried using any other cds. I guess I will try but I don't see how that could be the issue seeing as how I've used these very same disks before sucessfully.
Thanks for all the help.

Re: Illegal disc error with NERO
Hi Ack!
Have you checked Windows device manager for the CD drive? No exclamtion mark above it?
If it is? Then you have a driver / firmware problem.
Maybe it's Windows wich have messed up the registry as usual?
Try a registry cleaner. I've seen cd and dvd drives, that have magically "dissapeard", suddenly be back again after running a registry cleaner / repair software.
Or try pull the power to the drive. Then boot into windows.
Shut down and plug the drive back again. Sometimes, such woodoo helps lol.
