Trouble Installing and Uninstalling on WinXP

For the last month I have been having trouble installing and uninstalling software on a WinXP OS computer.

MACHINE:
Name/No.: Dell Dimension XPS T500
OS: WinXP Service Pack 3
HD: 8.47 GB [HD has about 500MB Free Space]
CPU: Intel Pentium III 498MHz
Memory: 256MB
Internet Connection: DSL

QUESTIONS:

• What can be done to trouble shoot the problem?
• Is there a way to correct the problem without troubleshooting?

What exactly is the problem? 'Trouble installing and uninstalling' doesn't tell us much.

Hi Gunslinger!

If I try to update a program (install a newer version), the process will proceed to a certain point and then freeze. I have to use the Task Manager to end the process.

The two main programs (OpenOffice and IDriveE).

Both programs allow one to uninstall the old version and then install the updated version. However, on each attempt the process freezes. I have also not been able to uninstall the present versions so I can go ahead and install the updated versions.

What could the problem be?

No, I did not try safe mode.

I installed a program called "Cleanse Uninstall Pro" from the GiveawayOfTheDay.com web site.

Interestingly, the program did not remove the programs after it was run but it did something because I was able to remove the programs from the Program Directory. Before, running the "Cleanse Uninstall Pro" I got warning messages if I tried to directly remove the programs from the Program Directory.

After directly removing the programs, I ran a registry cleaner, "Eusing Free Registry Cleaner".

Then I installed the upgraded programs with no problem.
