Particular Visual Lag on Windows Vista

I'm at a loss here. I've tried spyware scans, virus scans, defragging, CCleaner, I've even reduced my startup items to practically nil.

I can't seem to get rid of this odd visual lag. It takes almost half a second for Firefox to switch between tabs, and when I'm playing videos I close the tab and it remains playing for another 2 seconds instead of simply closing instantly. Other windows take longer than they should to pop open (miliseconds, but visible) and I am completely pissed off by now. I can't seem to find the culprit. I think I'm even considering getting a powerful video card just to get rid of this bullshit problem (if its the solution...).

I'm running Windows Vista on an Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 with 8GB of RAM and an nVidia Geforce 8500 GT. This should NOT be happening. I have 1.5TB of space spread out on several partitions on two drives.

This has been steadily getting worse over the past month or two, I've only started to really notice lately. When I first installed it was running quite smoothly, although not PERFECT, but smooth, at least.

I've noticed also that my CPU is always spiking around 10% or 12% from a more common 4% to 6% especially when I have the sidebar open. I don't know why this would happen, even Firefox is always taking up at least 10% CPU. I've killed most visual effects, though not all. But that's not the problem, I'm almost certain. I don't know what to do anymore or what to check.

HELP.

Here's my hijackthis log to start with, if you see anything unusual...

Re: Particular Visual Lag on Windows Vista

I had this exact same problem when I dropped back down to 32-bit for testing purposes. I hated it and haven't gone back to 64-bit. I don't know what could be causing the problem, but this might help someone else diagnose the possible issue. It sounds like it could be a page file issue too though... that's the only guess I really have.

Re: Particular Visual Lag on Windows Vista

I tried fiddling with the paging file settings but I see no difference. Also, I'm on Vista 64-bit.

Re: Particular Visual Lag on Windows Vista

See, I don't have that problem since going to Vista 64-bit. Hm... if it's not the page file, I can only think that maybe your video card drivers were updated and aren't working the best. I forget the site that Goranpaa gave me a long time ago to find older drivers... I think it was Guru3d.

I'm just brainstorming ideas though. I don't have any kind of troubleshooting going on in my head, haha.

I'm so close to reformatting it's ridiculous. But I think I can hold on for Windows 7. It should be out soon... right...? Right??????

Re: Particular Visual Lag on Windows Vista

Do you have Spybot SD with the "immuneization" enabled? This, will cause the FF tab problem you have. If you have? Reinstall Spybot without this setting.

Re: Particular Visual Lag on Windows Vista

O.k

But I dont think you should go reinstalling Windows quite yet. If you google on " Firefox slow to switch between tabs" you will see that this seem to be an issue that happends now and then.

Re: Particular Visual Lag on Windows Vista

Again guys, this isn't just a Firefox issue. I said it happens with other windows too. Firefox behaves the same way in safe mode as it does regularly.

Re: Particular Visual Lag on Windows Vista

Hm. Sorry I missed that it was happenin' with other windows too. Nothing looks suspicious in your HJT Log.

I would try logging in as another user and try in Safe Mode to test if it still happens. Given that you seem pretty clean and have killed several processes, I would venture to guess that it's probably one of the newer drivers on your system or something wrong with your hardware. Did you try running older drivers or more minimalistic drivers from Guru3d?

Is it just slow switching between un-minimized windows? Or is it slow only switching between minimized windows? Both?

EDIT: What about Alt-Tabbing? Does that still respond slowly?
