Can't install Gears on my Vista / Need for GMail Offline

I tried to install the GMail Offline function, but a popup told me I needed to install GEARS.

When I do that, it fails with this message: Google Update installation failed with error 08x004071c.

So I ask for online help, and I get this message: "Audit Mode Detected -- Editing the Windows registry is an advanced process, so you might want to contact your system administrator for help."

Well, I don't have a System Admin, just lil ole me. I sure would like to have GMail Offline, but I'm intimidated by the process I'm being asked to attempt:

1. Go to Start > Run.
2. In the window that appears, enter regedit and click OK.
3. Find the following registry key:
* For Vista: The value of ImageState in HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\State
* For XP: The value of AuditInProgress in HKLM\System\Setup
4. Right-click the registry key and select Modify.
5. Delete the value and click OK.


Can anyone give me any guidance, advice, or encouraging words about how I might be able to conquer this obstacle?

I have never tried that function myself.

Why not just use an ordinary mail program and configure it up to pop from the gmail mailbox? I've done this myself and it works without any problems.

You need to have IMAP and POP enabled in your online gmail account for it to work.
