question about multiboot os's

Hey all,

I'm planning on getting a laptop within the next couple of weeks. I've been reading around and it looks like Windows 7 64 bit version will be the fastest. I've also read there are a lot of compatibility problems with older programs and games (like really old games). I was wondering, could you see it being problematic to install Windows 7 64 bit, Windows xp 32 bit, and either ubuntu or debian? I know it's alot, but if I'm able I would like to have all 3.

Is this impracticable?

I would suggest that you choose one operating system as your primary one and then you choose to install VirtualBox and run all your other operating systems within this application.

Hey, thanks for your reply. I just checked the virtualbox website, and it looks very decent. I was under the impression it was strictly for Linux!

A few more questions: assuming you have used virtualbox before, what is the performance like for an operating system such as xp? Is it laggy? What can I expect?

Finally, I have a student edition of Windows 7, do you think running that in virtual box will be pointless with my current hardware configuration (see specs in sig)?

I have never used VirtualBox myself, but I have seen it in action and from that I saw, it's pretty memory hungry. Other than that, if your hardware is what I can see from your signature, you should be fine using it, but if you could upgrade to 2 GB of RAM, this will boost up the performance.

I was unable to find any performance charts, so I guess you'll find it when you test it out.

I'm playing around with it now. I installed windows 7 and it actually runs faster than my host xp operating system. No lag at all! Pretty cool program.
