Feedback for "Report this post..."
I don't know how often people do use the "Report this post to Moderators" button, but I think there should be a policy that moderators respond to these reports in one form or another, regardless of how they choose to deal with the issue that was reported. I know I've used this mechanism in the past, but as far as I can tell, no action was taken, and nobody has contacted me about whether anything was being done, why nothing was being done, or if anybody even received the report in the first place.
I understand that the mods are really busy most of the time and don't have much time to devote to this place all the time, but the whole point of that button's existence is to save moderators' time by allowing users to police each other's posts (so mods aren't burdened with having to read/filter everything all the time). Nobody's going to end up using this feature if no visible action or feedback is given in response to it.
What do you think?

Re: Feedback for "Report this post..."
I agree. I use the button occasionally, and even though I know what it does, I just sit there and wonder if anybody actually gets the message or not...
What the button does is send an e-mail to all the moderators of the forum that the message was posted in. That e-mail should eventually be read. But, with no conformation of any kind, and the pretty efficient spamfilters nowadays, you can only guess what happens after you've done your part.
A simple PM from the mod that handles it would do the trick. I don't think that would be a whole lot of extra work, as I don't assume the button gets used that much.

I've never used the button before, but now I'm furiously pressing all the buttons in this thread to test it.

Re: Feedback for "Report this post..."
The button works, it sends all us Mods and email with a link to the thread and whatever you put in for the comments. Then its up to whoever gets there first to deal with it.
These days we generally just file away the offending posts.

It'd still be nice to let people know though, since at least for the few use cases I've found for the button, I've seen neither any filing away nor any responses from any of the mods explaining why no action was taken. Which led me to the natural assumption that no one paid attention to it in the first place.

Re: Feedback for "Report this post..."
No problem, I can start doing it.
Right now I think Shal and I (and Laggy to) are the only MODs. And really I think we only get one or two reported posts a week anyways. Most of it being SPAM threads.

Hi Tecil.
Good suggestion, I will use some sort of notification in the future.

I assure you we check out every email we get.
Well, I do, anyway. There are only a few people who ever report posts anyway.

Duh, TR, you're a SUPER moderator, not *just* a moderator like me and Tecil.
That's what Tecil meant, I'm sure... yeah...
