Microsoft Releases New XP For Media

Microsoft has released Windows XP Media Center Edition.

The new version of Windows has capabilities for capturing, digitizing and rendering analog TV feeds on a PC from an internal tuner or from a separate set-top box or personal video recorder. Built-in features let users browse TV channels and schedules, record current or future TV programs, and rewind, fast-forward or pause through those programs as you would on a VCR.

Other features let users store and view their digital pictures and digital music on the PC. Users can control these functions via a remote control using an RF interface based on Philips' RC-6 protocol. A separate IR peripheral made by Universal Electronics lets the PC control a set-top box, personal video recorder or TV to capture video from cable or satellite TV networks via an S-video connection.

This will not be offered as a stand-alone product, but rather only by OEM builders. There are some pictures of a running machine at Digit-Life. More on this and on Media Player 9 is at EETimes.
