Ants! Freakin' Ants!

Okay, my kitchen is clean. Spotless. Wiped down with Formula 409 on a daily basis, even. Mopped with Clorox.
WHY THE HELL ARE THERE ANTS IN MY SINK? They come in through a crack in the windowsill and die of starvation on my counter (or in my coffee cup). We left a bowl with a teeny bit of milk out today and there were 17 dead ants floating and 6 live ones crawling or swimming. In two hours time. There was also a whole mess of them in the sink and on the windowsill. I went on a Lysol rampage - that kills the little bastards pretty quickly, and smells better than Raid.
So anyway, does anyone have any ideas WHY there are ants in my sink and on my windowsill? Better yet, does anyone know how to get rid of them?!? I can't call the landlord until Monday afternoon.

Get some ant traps. They work well.
As for why they are there, could be alot of things. You said you clean religiously, so that makes me wonder. Perhaps there is a chunk of food sittin somewhere that you cant see. Hell, I left a half eaten pop tart under my bed just to see what would happen.
Dont do that.

Yea, spray the whole outside of the window sill with ant killer, then try and caulk up the crack if possible.
:edit:
as for why they're coming in...what's the weather like?

If your going to use Raid or any other spray, becareful not spray on any kitchen utensils or food, because it will poison more than ants...
It's most probably some food left on the floor somewhere, like behind the stove?

I have the same problem Shalome, I tried different things but the ant traps worked the best for me.

first of all, dont spray. that just kills the ones that are there, doesnt do anything for the ones you cant see or will come in later.
theres 2 environmentally friendly things you can do (and since this IS your kitchen, thats what you want, not toxic fumes). locate the trail, which means dont kill them for a while, just monitor. place bait stations on the trail, the ones that claim to kill the queen. now, the important part is not to kill the ants, you want them to take the bait back to the nest.
leave the baits in place for a day or so, then find out what attracted them and remove it, if you can. that should force them to the baits. just kinda leave the ants and baits alone for a week.
if after that, you havent seen an improvement, use a powder called diatomaceous earth. it kills by cutting them up, its non toxic. you could eat this stuff. anyway, put this stuff along your baseboards, windowsill, and any other place they might be coming in.
have the landlord pay for it.
um, you have a garbage disposal in your sink? if so, run some lemons and ice cubes through it to clean it.

The ants traps do the best work and I am sure the ants are coming in because of the weather or there is some food somewhere.
I just had a problem in my house...not ants, but...mice...got 4 mice in one day.

i say get some of those bug bombs from home-depo, work great

yes they do. however, they only kill whats there. and they leave a toxic film on everything, theyd spend days washing the whole apartment down.

why not just go outside your window(asuming autside your window is ground) and follow them and find there farm... then do one of two things... dig it up and try to destory it manually or put them ant bait things there...
or you could get a fishtank and put it over the ant farm and the sun'll cook um ... (hey it works for cats lol)

The ants have pulled a disappearing act since this afternoon's Lysol rampage. No trace of them.
I DID move the ant trap I have right on the spot where they come out of the windowsill. Maybe they went there first and then went back to their colony and died little ant deaths. It's the kind that is supposed to kill the queen, so we'll see what happens.
Oh, and Thee? Our apartment is on the second floor, so they're probably coming in from the trees outside or --ugh-- all the way up the inside of the walls. We didn't have this problem before the 7 indochinese people living below us got deported by immigration! I think maybe the ants had food down there while those people lived there.
