» Luge Design . . - basic

This design is based on the one found in Darren Lott's luge book. Take a look if you can...

What you need:

A good mate. Preferably some that knows how to measure.
Long ruler.
Pencil.
Measuring tape.
Ply wood sheet +/-500mm taller than you & 200mm wider than you. It should be 25mm thick, or more if your heavy.
Duct tape.
PVC plumbing pipe 50mm Diameter 400mm long. Blue Section.
8 x M5 counter sink high tensile screws, with Nylock nuts and washers. Their length: (wood thickness + truck base plate + 15mm).
10 x 15mm wood screws.
A sheet of thin sponge to lie on (optional). Green Section.
A block of sponge for your head rest. Red Section.
Toolbox, jigsaw, drill.
Genkem glue or similar (Contact Adhesive).
Sand paper.

Method:

Lie down on the centre of the plywood sheet and get your buddy to trace you. With your hands at your sides in a luging position.
Now using you ruler create the shape with straight edges (see pic), making it +/- 50mm wider on each side.
Add the taper in front, you want this so you have space to put your feet down when braking. You also need to make it long enough so you can mount the foot peg in the right place (your legs should be slightly bent).
Sand all the edges so it doesn’t splinter.
Mount the trucks underneath the board, one under your head and the other just behind you knees. Use the 8 x M5 counter sink high tensile screws, with nylock nuts and washers. (Grey section)
Using the left over wood cut triangles as in the picture and mount them underneath with the wood screws. You will need you buddy to mark them off when you lie on the board in the right position so you can hold on. (Black section)
Cut out the flat foam and stick it down underneath you with the glue. (Green section)
Using the PVC pipe, split it down the middle on one side with a saw and push it over the board. Drill 4 holes through it and screw it on using 4 wood screws. Then wrap the whole thing in Duct tape. (Blue section)
Lie on the board and mount the sponge under you head. (Red section)
Your basic luge should now be complete.
