Go to the follow website, then on the right where it says "Latest Winning Numbers" click "Numbers".
http://www.nylottery.org/
The lottery officials say that those numbers were chosen the same way all other numbers are for the same game, Randomly on a machine. I wonder how many people chose those numbers.

eh big deal. odds were 1:500 that one of the drawings would come up with that number.

Oh quiet you. It's still quite weird.
Posted by: Erekose
what were the numbers? 911?
Posted by: TheeMon
yes
Posted by: ZeRo_MaXwInG
I heard they're still trying to get a tab on how many people had the number.

wanna bet the lottery was rigged during that day, regardless of what the lottery officials said?
Posted by: AK47
It sure seems that way..
Posted by: TheeMon
yeah prolly... everything's rigged nowa days
Posted by: ZeRo_MaXwInG
Yep.

like what?
Posted by: redwench
sigh. ok, all of you go take a statistics course. go on now.
Posted by: Muggs
chances were acutually 1:1000
and i think it was like 50 people that won just 500 each
Posted by: redwench
no, there were two drawings that day. each one had a 1:1000 chance. the total then is 2:1000 or 1:500. and those pick 3 games dont even pay that well, its usually around $100

yeah, it's easier to blame statistics than to accept how easy it is to hack into a random computer drawing... you put too much trust in human nature, and even more on mathematics...
Posted by: redwench
no, i dont. but those drawings are certified by auditors that watch said drawings. in most states, they dont use computers to pick the numbers, they still use those little balls. someone in ny would know that. but here, the drawings are actually televised. and are supervised by various people to ensure they arent rigged.
hacking into a computer would be easy, yes. but trying to rig a physical drawing with witnesses is something else.
besides, did anyone happen to notice the numbers of the second drawing? i dont see anyone jumping up and down over those, and they would also have to be rigged.

I bet the odds of those numbers appearing in that order (as opposed to 119 or 191) also follow the 1:500 odds? And also the odds of it being drawn at that particular date?
If it seems to good to be true, it probably is
p.s. what was noteworthy in the second drawing?
Posted by: redwench
the odds of any particular number in a single 3 number drawing are 1:1000.
the number 123 would have the same odds. as would 321. if you include permutations, the odds would change, in the gamblers favor. in a 3 number drawing, the odds of any permutation of 911 would be 3:1000 per drawing ^^
linkage to the lottery site, a little further in than skyhns: http://www.nylottery.org/about/d_about.php
as you see, they have an on-camera draw team.
the numbers of the second drawing were 833. very similar to 911, yet nobody thinks anything of it. why? because we accept that that was indeed a random drawing.
the odds of it being drawn on that particular date are the same as for any other date. if that number came up on may 27, you wouldnt even notice. the thing about random numbers is that they are indeed random. which means odd coincidences do happen. let me put it this way, the odds of you being hit by lightning are over a million to one. much higher odds than this drawing. would you take a stroll in a thunderstorm across a bare field?

That is only if you believe New York lotteries are "totally" random to begin with...
http://www.mises.org/freemarket_det...der=articledate
So again, is it really just statistics?
Posted by: redwench
i think you posted the wrong link laggy. that is a rant (and a very accurate one at that) on the economics of the ny lottery. doesnt say a word about whether their drawings are legitimately random.
ive seen the same criticisms about lotteries before, but he puts it quite nicely. its a good link nonetheless.
