Just a question.

What do most people look for in a web page, looks, graphics, information? Reason I am asking a buddy and I want to create a webpage. We are alright with making them, just not creative enough to come up with an idea. We really dont want to pay for the hosting and not have anyone interested in the site. Know what I mean? Well back to work.. enjoy yourself.

my firm belief is content first, fancy layouts later.

I've seen too many sites where the person works for weeks getting this huge layout working, and when they're finally done with it they don't have anything to actually put on the site.

with two of you, that's not a problem, one of you does the layout and one of you works on content.

Probally the best way to start out.

All of my sites have been simple text layouts, with a few graphics here and there to make it look interesting.

matter of preferance for me, since I spend most of my time either playing the games in question or working on my projects for them.

Simple way is good for a quick one, but a good layout won't hurt if you've got the time to do it, contentwise, you're going to want to start the site with a "aim" and then expand on it.

like I did with the Bastards page, started with one game (UO), then I expanded it to rune, eventually removed UO and added all the games I play with kull and spider.

Then I added in the sound pack for Starcraft and the enhancment packs for quake 2.

so what you start out with eventually will become something else, but you should almost always start with one or two basic ideas of what you want to do with it.

god damn this is long.

In the land of webpages, content is king.

I guess Bish already explained it at length, but lemme add some more things.

First, there has to be a clear goal for doing the webpage. What do you want to do? What interests you the most in the webpages you visit? Do you think you can apply the same principle on the site you're gonna make?

There are webpages that only cater to a specific genre, or targets a particular demographic. The trick here is to concentrate on specifics rather than try to encompass a broad spectrum of interests. For example, instead of trying to target ALL computer geeks, target the hardware people first. After some time has passed, target the software people. Then target the gaming community. It has to be a gradual process, because trying to undertake a broad topic will just give you more headaches, and if there are only two of you, your page will be under construction for an excruciatingly long time because of the massive amounts of info to accumulate to encompass the broad topic.

It's VERY difficult to try and develop a steady readership for the site, much less a community. The trick here is not to get discouraged. It's not about hits - hits are sometimes unreliable. What you should be concerned about are return visitors, because they are the ones who would keep your site above water.

Some ideas that come to mind would be putting up an interest club (but not a clan or a guild). For example, a movie club or a book club, or even a gaming club. That would be enticing enough for users to visit. Another idea would be a news site concentrating on a particular point of interest. And yet another would be a fan site on a game, an author, or even a band or a singer. And then again maybe you could put up a tech support and information site, hehehe...

In any case, choose your site goal carefully. And make sure you will go with it all the way. I have seen far too many quality sites with a built-in community suddenly shrivel up and die because of either lack of interest or lack of funds.

As the admiral in Brood War said: "Are you prepared to go with this all ze way?"

I also thought content was more important. It don't seem hard to make a fancy layout, its just content. And I also don't want to use the page to make money. Just something to do in my spare time, and something people have interest in., and would keep interest.

If it interests them they say oooo lets go and go to this site. IF they come and there is a great layout they say wow jee this is a great site. But there has to be content.

Content gets them there and gets them to come back. But layout can either discourage them to go to another site or stay with it. Something I just made up because I am board now :-)
