People wonder why Canadians don't think much of the US...

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

This is a good example.

The following is a scan of a flyer distributed by these american companies:

I don't get it. I'd take beautiful scenery over architecural buildings any day.

(BTW, I'm a dual citizen of US and Canada)

Posted by: rockjock

I see that Toronto is mis-represented in that picture. It looks pretty good for a major city.

I am missing your point. Why does this advertising picture bother you?

Posted by: Null Actor

Just to be clear: This has nothing to do with the fact that they listed toronto. It has to do with the picture. Which most definitely isn't Toronto, and most likely isn't even Ontario.

Edit: To clarify a bit more, their advertising department could have taken 30 seconds to do a search on google and found, I dunno, say, a picture of the CN Tower. But instead they just use some generic 'nature' scene as if Canada is just some big wilderness that doesn't know what cities are. But the worst part is the fact that they probably didn't bother, because that's the common perception of Canada in the US.

Posted by: Canis Lupus

I don't get it either ... I'd definitely prefer the beautiful scenery instead of those other two places ...

and imho, you're reading too much into that ad ... there is a difference between stereotyping and misinformation ...

Posted by: Null Actor

Okay, lemme make it more obvious. Having it the way above is the exact same as if they'd done this:

http://members.rogers.com/nova_z/travela.jpg

Posted by: Null Actor

But laggy, it IS misinformation. If scenery like that exists, it will be most likely no less than at least 500km from Toronto.

Posted by: ZeRo_MaXwInG

I think what Nova is trying to get at here is that the company just doesn't take the time to look at T.O. Just post a picture of what they steroetypically think is Toronto and more so, Canada. A picture of the waterfront or as Nova mentioned, the CN Tower would've done fine. Of course, it's only an ad but its debatable to either side.

Posted by: uh...ok

Yea, what Zero said. I got it after Nova's first explanation.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say this belongs in rant and rave. Yes??

Posted by: AltronHGX

Wait you mean that picture is a REAL flyer??

I thought that was a joke pic !

Posted by: redwench

well, id like to see that flyer myself, the scan isnt real clear. but unless i miss my guess, that "toronto" picture is of somewhere in the Rocky Mountains. certainly nowhere near toronto, probably not even canada.

Yes, my coworker has the original. He scanned it after he got it in the mail.

Well, the original is real. The LA one was photoshopped to prove a point.

you know there are actually rocky mountains in canada?

Posted by: ZeRo_MaXwInG

Well, it's not hard. It's all over the maps and atlas'.

Posted by: Erekose

there are cities in canada? what do you do with your horses when you go to the cities nova? and i suppose they make you leave the moonshine in the cart with your rifle and coonskin cap

Posted by: Null Actor

Yeah, and on weekends we liberate black slaves from the US.

Posted by: ZeRo_MaXwInG

Man, those Mounties must liberate hundreds of slaves all the time! Especially Dudely Do-Right! He's my hero and the greatest Mountie of all time!

What I am trying to understand here is how one company's ignorance of Toronto is universal of how justified Canadians are of not thinking much of the US ... I am sure there is something less trivial than this to justify whatever point it is you're trying to make...

Posted by: Jeddak

Being from Kansas and being part of the US military(got out in 1977) I heard all the stereo types about being from america and from Kansas. No matter what country I was in it was assumed that Kansas was all a barren flat plain (which it isn't), was covered by herds of cattle and cowboys(which of course is not true) and tornadoes were a constant hazard (never seen one in 47years). And being an American meant I was rich, brash and loudmouthed even though I was none of those things. I didn't hold it against anyone because I knew they just didn't know any better. I never realized I was supposed to judge an entire country by a few misguided people's perceptions.

i think that statement above hit's the nail on the head. it's way too easy to have a false perception of things we know very little of. i am probably guilty of thinking of canada in the way it is show in the flyer, because i have never been to canada and i really don't know much about it. that being said though, i am not narrow minded enough to think their are no big cities in canada. i guess the perception of canada on the flyer is just a reflection of the lack of knowledge about the details of canada as a country, and maybe it's just someone's false perception of canada that comes out with the picture in the flyer.

What annoys me the most is when people in the United States will think of snow and igloos right away, when the word Canada is mentionned. I mean some false perception of a country can be forgiven, but an absurd perception of a neighbouring country like that is just crazy. Anybody that has some common sense won't think that people in Canada all live in igloos and that it snows there all the time.

My point being of course that I don't mind someone making a mistake about something because he or she doesn't know. However it does annoy me when someone says something totally stupid, when it only takes common sense to figure out what he's saying is wrong.

Posted by: AltronHGX

Who the HELL thinks igloos when they think of Canada????

Shouldn't they have all died from bumping their heads on coffee tables when bending down to tie their velcro shoes??

I'm with you on this one laggy.

Me thinks that the Toronto picture should have Bobby Orr on it, not some mountains.

lol...The hockey mind

Posted by: redwench

yes, muggs, i am aware that the rocky mountain range is in both the us and canada, which is why my post reads the way it does.

Posted by: SpudDoctor

It's an ad. Of course its a load of crap, but its obviously fairly effective, because some of you seem rather upset about it. So not only is it just a trivial piece of paper some work colleague got in his mail box. Even so, if i where th amek of that ad, i would be rather happy as it did its job quite splendidly.

Posted by: Null Actor

But my point is that the mere fact that a lying portrait of 'Toronto' does its job is what annoys the **** out of me.

Posted by: AltronHGX

I like you.

Posted by: Null Actor

Sorry.

Posted by: AK47

What the hell have you done with Nova?

That's exactly what I'd be unhappy about though. What if the picture was the same but had "Sydney" written on it instead of Toronto? Would that not offend you in any way?

Nah I got a better idea.... Change Nova's (or Null's ) avatar to an American Flag instead, or maybe a picture of George W. Bush...... I think that would change his mind

Posted by: Canis Lupus

I got an idea... why don't we get back on topic?

Posted by: AtariFX

Wow, Toronto looks beautiful!! I'm gonna go on vacation there, ya know, to get away from traffic, people, and just the city in general.

Posted by: redwench

omg nova, you guys are so lucky up there. you have the most awesome serial killer. looks like hes really going to be top of the list. woot.

A Canadian pig farmer suspected of being a serial killer has been charged with the murders of four more women, bringing the total to 11.
Police probing the cases of 63 missing women are still searching the farm owned by 52-year-old Robert William Pickton, 30 kilometres east of Vancouver.

63, hot damn!

Well if you didn't get the humor I was referring to the fact that he acted as if he believed the picture of Toronto at the beginning of the thread. Everyone knows Toronto is a big city.... including foreigners....

Posted by: Canis Lupus

Oh sorry, I didn't know you were trying to be funny ... my mistake
