whats the best method of getting a website into the major search engines??

Well, the best way get your site into the major search engines is always the manual way - which is submitting it individually to each search engine (Yahoo, AltaVista, Infoseek, Lycos, Hotbot, etc). Yahoo actually requires manual submission, and it cannot be automated.
However, for the smaller search engines, it helps to have a submission bot of sorts. I myself use SubmitWolf Pro and it works very well - it's the same basic script bot used by a majority of search engines.
The key here is strategic keywords. What I did was to create a separate gateway page with all the necessary keywords optimized for each search engine, and submit them separately to their respective search engines. Although targetted listings are more efficient, it is also more costly.
Hehehe, I have gotten quite lucky on search engine placement. Try google.com and type in "blizzard tech support"

Recently major search engines have started to charge for your website to be listed. They do this in an attempt to tone down the 99% crap you find when you use something other than google
The fee ranges from a few dollars to a few hundred depending on your plan.
Bloodsuckers I tell ya.

If your company has some extra cash, I'd greatly recommend targetted leads instead of just normal search engine placement. Companies who sell targetted leads will get the most important keywords for your site and optimize each of these words to gateway pages, so that they will get higher rankings on major search engines.
However, search engine placement is very competitive, also very frustrating. It requires creative keyword placement, as well as tenacity and patience. And there is no such thing as free top-10 placement nowadays. If you want a higher rank, more often than not, you have to give some bread...
