Hosts

In the intrests of furthering myself I will be purchasing a domain name and a host (i assume thats just about it) of my own.

I know the domain name is something like $70 for two years but what I dont know is what is a good host and how much they cost, or am i better off just going with a free site and paying them the 5 bucks a month or whatever to not have banners come up on my pages. Also I am not sure if there are things i need to look for in a host such as cgi handling and what not or if being able to run my own cgi scripts is only a problem with free hosts.

Btw laggy (if you are lookin at this) I am pickin cgi up fast and I can already create and search databases and retrieve information and am working on a newbie newscript (partialy why i want my own host and domain name so i can password what needs to be passworded)

I would love any help as this will be my first time purchasing imaginary space 8). If you dont have any good hosts to recomend gimme the names of ones you dont like so I can avoid those.

Thank You All.

I have been using commercial webhosts for three years now, and sometimes some of the feature bloat they have is something you won't be using at all. If you are going to choose one, make sure not to be blinded by "unlimited space" or "unlimited POP3" or "unlimited bandwidth." You won't be needing more than 100MB of space unless yoiu wanna store MP3s or have files available for download.

I can recommend the following, which I have been using or have used since I first got out of Geocities:
[*] Interland - Using it for our company site and for the US site.[*] HiSpeed Technologies - Using it for my personal site, Tolitz.Com, which doesn't have anything in it yet http://www.opentechsupport.net/forums/tongue.gif[*] Affinity - Gonna use it for a web design site I am planning, BigRedX.Net.[*] AllWebCo - Using it as host for this site, Open Tech Support.

All the above have been great and haven't had any major problems yet. Interland has a great support department, and Affinity has a kickass website management interface.

The sites I DO NOT recommend, in case you come across them are:
[*] CiHost.Com - I moved OTS.Net to this company, and the DNS servers got farqed! I asked them to fix it, and two weeks passed and they can't fix it. I had to move it to AllWebCo. And then I found out that they are really NOTORIOUS. How notorious? They have a site that is dedicated to posting complaints about the company. Forgot the URL http://www.opentechsupport.net/forums/wink.gif[*] HostPro - Used them for almost a year for my company's website. They had failing database servers, intermittent offtimes, and crappy tech support. Our site was down coz of a server update for two weeks, and they even wanted to charge us for that month. I moved our site to Interland, and we have never had a downtime yet.

Great to hear you're coming up with new scripts. Maybe we cna beta test some scripts for you? Keep up the good work. The more well-rounded you are in web technology, the easier it is to get a decent-paying internet job.

I should know. I'm still regretting the time I could have spend learning more advanced server-side scripting.

Im lookin at that AllWebCo for my host. They seem like a pretty good deal 10gigs of traffic would be like a site getting 300-600 hits a day at least. And I could never come up with 500 megs worth of web site hehe. Any words of caution before I make my move. I wont be buying it until at least saturday when I see if my parents will get it for me or not (better for them to spend 250 dollars then me) plus i need to come up with a name. Everything under the gawd damn sun is takin. http://www.opentechsupport.net/forums/wink.gif

AllWebCo is a good choice. Things to note if you're going to host your site with them:

1.) They don't normally do tech support on the phone. They have an online control panel where you fill in a form and wait for their tech support representative to get back to you. Not really much of a hassle, since they respond pretty quickly. But if you're used to phone support, it may be a little clunky.

2.) Their site tracking software is a little less sophisticated than other web hosts (they don't use WebTrends). Not much of a hassle if you don't care too much about who, form where, and how many are visiting your site.

They are a pretty good web host and they have a good limited plan. I suggest you take advantage of it. Let me know how it goes.
