Networking probs

Hi, I've been having trouble with a network I've set up between my two computers. They both run Win XP Pro, the problems I've been having is slow or no connection between the computers e.g. open show workgroup computers, open other comp., and then go to enter either one of the two HD's on it... lock-up.
Also the other prob is when restarting the client comp. the internet connection on host comp is dropped.
Any help that can be offered will be very much appreciated.
Thanx,
NightMage

Is your file/print sharing active? Othwise (win98 anyway) an PC won't be able to map or see each other.

make sure you have ipx protocol in your network config.

I periodically have a similar networking problem with my laptop (W98) when I connect it to either my office or home network. You did not say if either was one, but the symptoms match.
There are two issues, if one of your computers is a laptop.
Your PC Card (PCMCIA?) may be autosensing the network for full/half duplex and getting it wrong. W98 thinks its on a network so it keeps polling periodically, which seems to lock up the computer for about 2 minutes (well, 2 forevers when I am in a hurry). I have found if I stop the card, shut down the computer, pull the card, boot the box with no network then shutdown, replace the card and boot again it usually finds the network (assuming I have the correct IPs, etc.) The network techies at my company said it was not unusual for the autosense mode to screw up. I'm a DBA, not a network type, so I will trust them, unless OTS says they're wrong.
As for the Internet connection. what kind is it? I also had similar problem with an internal DSL modem on my W98 proxy server. It would drop the connection whenever it was accessed for more than a few seconds by one of my other computers. I switched to an external connection (after much gnashing of teet at my ISP) and haven't had the problem since (over a year.)
This is for TCP/IP. I don't run IPX.
