Which console manufacturer do you think will dominate the broadband gaming arena?

Who will rein supreme in the broadband gaming industry?

Posted by: -EG-raynor

Microsoft by far

Posted by: Bobaroo

None, Consoles are not ment to be online.

What do you mean by being supreme? The one with the best capabilties or the one with the most users?

Well, if one has the most users then you can bet they have the best capabilities.

Xbox. Hands down. They're going all out. The PS2 might be comparible, but from the little I've kept up, the Xbox will reign as an online console.

Posted by: Canis Lupus

I'm with Bob on this one ... the main reason I got a console was because I was pretty sick of all the online, multiplayer games sprouting like mushrooms...

Posted by: Spider

Agreed. But you're a PC gamer. All those console-only gamers have been denied rich multiplayer and have had to sacrifice graphics and half of their screen to play with a buddy. The Xbox will pull in all those people, and they will rejoice in rich multiplayer goodness.

Posted by: Outlaw

Other, I couldn't care less who wins it, I won't be getting any of them anytime soon.

until they encounter the griefers and scammers, hehe ... well, look on the bright side - the online vets have a huge batch of newbies to play with

Posted by: -EG-raynor

would people be able to hack Console games as easily as PC games, or not at all

*Ksh* Roger that.

Probably not as easily, but I'm sure they'll figure something out.

Posted by: Xtren

I think Microsoft will dominate in this case. They have a more advanced console to work with, and I think this is going to be a major hit for the Xbox, more than for any other console.

Posted by: Spider

From what I hear they already need to work something out with pausing. I'm under the impression that if you're going to lose you can just pause it and wait for hte other person to leave, in effect forcing a loss on them and gaining a win. There are all kinds of exploits that people can take advantage of to get an unfair edge over their opponents, just because it's on a console, doesn't mean it'll be cheat-free. Far from.

Whos gonna dominate?

Not Nintendo.

The release of the GameCube pretty much wrapped that up by itself. However I think the GC will get more attention for its games that are not online anyway, because it seems that a good amount of their games suit the offline game-type.

Posted by: AK47

Yeah, I really dont give two shits if the thing is a success online.

As long as I can get my PSO fix, I really dont care what other online games they put out.

Posted by: Xtren

I'm expecting the Xbox to be a huge success online though. Afterall MS has been telling us how great it's going to be, and it's been a very long wait. They've had tons of time to prepare so I'd be very surprised, andmajorly disappointed if they were outperformed by the competing consoles like the PS2.

Posted by: Null Actor

Spider, pause is handled on a per game basis. The only reason it's a problem in those football games is because the developers were ****ing stupid.

Anyone with half a ****ing brain wouldn't have made such a retarded mistake.

Posted by: SKYHN

None of them. Consoles arent ready for online play. Perhaps the next generation will, but until broadband is available everywhere and at current dial-up prices, you wont see many people using them.

Although I have been surprised with how many people are playing online with PS2. Was excpecting it to be much lower.

Posted by: Amall

since console are silly, i think they will all be short lived...

Posted by: Spider

*shrug* I don't play sports games anyway. I still haven't gone out and bought a console --since my Dreamcast-- so I could really care less right about now.

Posted by: Null Actor

You people need to read the question. The question implies market domination based on the share of the online console market, not whether or not console online gaming will succeed.

No manufacturer is expecting much in terms of consoles to players ratio. It's a known that far more people play single player.

But surprise! This is also true of the PC. Supposedly only 15% of the people who bought UT ever played it online.

Microsoft XBox

Posted by: Bishlopim

Xbox definitely has a much better plan. The only problem for me is that it requires broadband. And since I am 20,000 feet from the closest CO I can only get IDSL with only 144kps. I don't think that counts as broadband.

Posted by: SKYHN

20,000 feet from CO? Thats rough. What state do you live in and what is your local phone company?

Posted by: Xtren

I can certianly see how that would suck for you Bishlopim, but honestly, it's a good thing that everyone will be using broadband. That way the games won't lag as much, which will definitely make them funner to play.

Posted by: Bishlopim

I live in southern CA and the local phone company here is Pac Bell. With IDSL will I be able to play Xbox live if I want to?

Posted by: Xtren

Yes you will, IDSL is still broadband. The only thing you can't use to play is a modem.

Posted by: Bishlopim

Ok, that's what I thought.

Posted by: Spider

I'm not sure about that. I thought Xbox live supplies it's own internet connection, you don't use an existing connection that you already have?

No you have to have your own broadband connection for Xbox live....

Posted by: Null Actor

xbox live is basically a matching and server service. With some built in xbox stuff to try and guarantee quality of service.

Posted by: Spider

oh
that's a bunch of horse shit

Posted by: Null Actor

Yeah right!

Do you know how insane it would cost for MS to rent lines going to every town and city in order to sell broadband with the xbox live? Geebuz, it'd probably cost them more than they have in the bank.

Regardless, they have stuff set up so it doesn't really matter anyway. It's all good.

Posted by: Xtren

Why the hell would MS supply the connection anyway.... It just wouldn't even be possible nor would it make sense.... because most people have their own.

Posted by: SKYHN

You can see how Xbox live is by downloading Gamespy Arcade for your PC.

Posted by: AK47

yuck

Posted by: The_Turks(ff7)

whatever system gets Squaresoft. People will buy Final Fantasys just because the title is sooo well known. Hell some people will just buy games from Squaresoft cuz they know the developer is good. But if Squaresoft decides to stick with console after FF11, then i dont know who would win the war. Wouldnt really care either.

I'll most likely pick up Xbox Live when it is released. Mainly for games like NHL2K3 and PSO.

I've been playing Halo online for the last couple of weeks using XBConnect over my DSL.

Played an awesome game for 4on4 Saturday night with some guys back east. We owned them.

Posted by: Spider

how can they enforce their "broadband only" nonsense if you supply the connection yourself? Couldn't you jack in a dialup just as easy as DSL?

Posted by: Tecil

There is no modem on the Xbox, and unless they make one down the road...

You could probably get around it if you had some kind of internet connection sharing and plugged your Xbox into a switch/hub. Thats how XBConnect works. I plug my Xbox into my switch and run the XBConnect software on my PC. It connects to their central server and you find games that way. Tricks the XBox into thinking you are connected using an iLink cable.

Posted by: Spider

Yeah, that's what I meant, if you have a dialup couldn't you just plug a cat5 into the xbox and play online with it?
Didn't mean to imply a modem for the xbox.

Posted by: Tecil

Possible. Don't know if it would work without actually trying it. I haven't had a modem in like 4 years. I'll have my friend try it with his Xbox. It would probably work for XBconnect, but not sure about Live until it is released.

Posted by: Xtren

It would such to play Xbox Live with a modem anyway, or at least you'd be far better off playing with broadband. You never know just how bad the lag would be with 56k.

Posted by: AK47

I'm sure its no worse than paying $45 + for broadband every month

Posted by: Null Actor

If your ping sucks, the quality of service software won't show you any games. That pretty much rules out most modems right there. Not only that, but if you can't support the minimum transfer (which I'd imagine is 128kbit or so, both ways), then it'll most likely drop you so you don't **** up the game for the other players.

Posted by: Spider

Cool.

Posted by: AK47

So you're saying I have a chance!

Posted by: Tecil

LOL Lloyd...
