I'm working with an old MAxtor drive in another machine that appears to be dead.
With different software, debug, HDM Delux, Maxblast, EZ, etc, I can get the drive to spin up and the software will read the controller and the CHS of the drive, but nothing will let me reset the partition or MBR to clean it off and start anew.
The drive was in a Compaq when my neice was downloading a file. Wham, dead.
Any suggestions?

No. The heads sound defective to me.
Get something reliable so you don't have to do this again.

Sounds like you have a problem. I've run quite a few maxtors, and I've never had a problem. But like anyone will tell you, you always, can have a problem. If it's not spinning up, even a little, then it's probably dead. Try it in another computer, if it still doesn't work. It's most likely a dead drive. Time to get a new one.

It will spin up and you can even hear the heads moving when trying to search the drive. Just no data. Fdisk, gdisk, ect. return the message "no physical drives found"

Make sure the cables and jumpers are set exactly right. Remember, top plug on cable is the slave, and first on the cable is the master. Make sure that's right. I had that problem with my OLD 486 66mhz system back in the day, and that's all it was. heh
