Looking into DVD-RW's

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I'm looking into getting a DVD-RW sometime soon and before I went out to buy one and get ripped off with the deal, I figured I'd ask around here first.

First of all, what's some of the better brands to look into. And second, what speeds are they up too. Sorry, but with a job, and a life, looking into researching much isn't a viable option for time consumption these days.

And just to make damn sure, I can burn CD-RW's and CD-R's too right? I'm 90% sure, but my GF's uncle bought a dell and his DVD-RW won't read or write on a CD-R for some reason. And he's to cheap for CD-RW's lol.

So basically, what brands and what speeds are the "decent" ones at these days. And what kind of ballpark figure pricing for a decent one? And I don't need the super fastes, but I want something with a little speed.

you can check out Tom's hardware for some information and a few reviews on dvd/rw drives.

I was watching Tech Tv and they mentioned dvd burners (they had it in a comparison with 2 other cd burners).

I think they said that the dvd burner only burns at 1 or 2 X, but with a dvd burner, thats alot faster than the speeds they use to measure the speed of a cd burner. They said that a dvd burner that writes at 1 or 2 X is equivalent to a cd burner that writes at 8 or 9 X.

I would buy one if they didn't cost more than two xbox consoles (the ones being sold at compusa and best buy are at least $450, wtf!).... I'll wait for the price on those things to come down to as low as $200 or $150 before I ever consider buying one...

I don't think a format has been settled on yet.

The formats are:
  • DVD+R(W)
    DVD-R(W)
    DVD-RAM
So, I'd recommend waiting for a bit unless you absolutely need a writer now. And then, you would already know what format you require.

CD drives are measured by mulitplier of 150 KB
DVD drives are measured by multiplier of 1.3 megabytes I believe, ill check back and confirm that later though.

Yes, wait.

Two things will happen with time.

1. A standard will be figured upon. You don't want to be a Sony Beta buyer (analogy time folks )

2. Price decrease on the units..and possibly just as important...but often overlooked..the media. Anyone priced the media lately. It used to be around $50 for a single DVD RW disc!

Well all I want it for is to make a copy of a DVD movie and keep the original from getting scratched and so forth. And for those extensive backups that not many people do.

I'm not sure about this, but I think you can't just copy a DVD by starting nero (or whatever) and telling it to copy it.

At least that's what "they" told me

And thats true for te most part.

In some cases though, you won't be able to unless your a reet h4xor and know how to get around copy protection on DVD's.

I use a DVD+RW drive from sony, don't have the acctual modle number, but 2.9x DVD write = 24x CD-R write, incase you were wondering. Not sure on the .9 part, but thats what the box, and manual say.

DVD+RW Discs ARE readable by most DVD drives/DVD Players. However, burning them is exactly what the write speed say it is. Slow. It takes 30 minutes to burn a single DVD and 2.9(?)x

Another turn down right now however, is that DVD+RW blanks run about 25$ for 3. And thats just for the cheap Verbatim brand.

Oh, and don't expect to be able to overburn DVD's, it doesn't work I've wasted 3 or 4 DVD's trying.

EDIT: To Clarify, my drive is 2.9(?)x/16x/24x/12x/32x (DVD+RW write/DVD Read/CD-R write/CD-RW write/CD Read). And I love it to death. Its the best 400$ I've ever spent.

I've done a bit of research on this myself. The Hewlett Packard drives (dvd+RW format) seem to be the ones that are the most compatible with new DVD players(as of a early this year).

Whether or not the DVD writer drives writes CD-R/RW's depends on how much you want to spend. There is a hewlett packard model that writes to only dvd's and its $350's . There is one that will do both dvd's and CD's and it is $100 more.

The latter model I was talking about the hp dvd writer dvd200e

There is also an older model writer the dvd100i that writes both dvd's and cd's. I have priced a few out and they are relatively cheap. less than $300

My research is a little outdated though... it was late last year/early this year that I did the research...and we all know how fast the puter industry moves.

* After looking at google gear... it seems a few more companies began producing drives that utilize the +rw format. All of their drives are in the low $300 range. http://www.googlegear.com/jsp/Produ...goryCode=010708
