If you want the absolute best right now and money is no object, then go for the ATi Radeon 9700 Pro. However, if you want good performance for a lower price(relatively, of course), then go for a GeForce 4 Ti 4400 or 4600. The cheapest, but still excellent performers would be the Radeon 8500 or the Geforce 4 4200.
It all really depends on how much you want to spend, but any of those lower-end cards would be great if you don't care about 4x Anti-Aliasing or 16x Anisotropic Filtering.

It depends on what price you want to pay.
I would either go with a GF4 Ti4200 for about $150 or a GF4 Ti4400 for about $190.

The GeForce 4 Ti 4400 with 128 MB is what I would think is a good buy right now for your system. It all comes down to how much you want to spent and what your needs/wants are.

Ack, I am quite happy with my Geforce 3!
Seriously, you can't go wrong with any of those cards mentioned.

Hardly the best. "Fastest" yes, but not the best. Not with ATI's drivers.
I would go with a GF4 Ti 4600 if you got the money and play graphic intense games, but if you dont, go with a Ti 4200 128mb.

ATI's drivers have been known to be bad, but the I haven't heard anything bad about the 9700's drivers.

Go visit GamersHQ or just about any other major Vid Card related site with forums. Hundreds of threads about them and their problems.
The GF4 will work out of the box, the 9700 is taking a chance.

I am too. Not sure though but Warcraft causes a bit of stress running at full res/detail, otherwise its fine. While on the topic, a good card for a bargain price now would be the GeForce 3 Ti 200/500. It will probably be able to run games 5 years in the future, if I keep the one I'm using now. .

MSI GeForce 4 TI 4400 VTD running without tweaks. 3DMark with default settings.

Yeah, ATI's Drivers suck!
I mean come on!
They're like so out of date!
And EVERYONE has problems with them!
</sarcasm>
If you don't currently own an ATI card and use their new driver set, then don't comment on how bad their drivers are. Unless you've experienced it first hand, theres no need to comment on it at all, regardless of what you've heard from other people.
I've used three ATI cards recently with the new catalyst drivers. Its true they can't top nVidia's drivers, but they are comparable. While there is a major difference, there are no errors, constant lockups, and choppy graphics, as depicted by so many. Those that have this are either fools that didn't take 5 minutes to read the readme, and realize you have to un-install older drivers, before installing the new driver set, or extremely unfortunate.
Sorry if I seem rude, but people who seem dead set that ATi's drivers suck without even using them, peev me off.

I say the nVidia line is a better more stable card. But it's really up to you. The ATi cards may be "faster" but not by much at all. ANY game I have right now, which I don't have any REAL new games, but I have quite a few that are pretty graphic intense, and I can run them all with FSAA 4x @ 1024x768 without a single skip or drop.
And I'm only running a GF4 Ti-4400 same as Memns as a matter of fact. Really a good card and worth the price. And some of the newer nView toys are really helpful and fun to "tinker" with.
My opinion is a nVidia card.

I have used a Radeon 9700. A good friend of mine is pretty much financially secure the rest of his days, and buys just about every damn thing that comes out(he bought an extigy 2 days after buying an audigy platinum, lol). When he bought a Radeon 9700, I went and tried it with several games. Out of the 5 I tried(Dungeon Siege, DAOC, RTCW, UT2k3 Demo, BF1942) only 2 of them would run properly. The UT2k3 demo would keep exiting out after you get in a game after about 2 mins, DAOC wouldnt run at all, and BF1942 kept locking up at random points. The only one than ran properly was Dungeon Siege. RTCW ran, but had problems with garbled textures here and there, and Trueform would not work. Also had to turn a few things off after visiting PlanetWolfenstein forums(Corona Distance and Particles). And yes it was a fresh install, it was a brandnew PC built the day before.
ATI released an unfinished card. They just wanted to get something out fast to try and make it seem like they have beaten nvidia, when all they have done is make themselves look foolish. But dont take my word for it, go spend $400 on one yourself and find out first hand.

If they did that then everyone should have problems with almost every game, and I'm sure that every reviewer would tell about something this important.

Right. If you don't like tweaking a few things to fine tune your card, then don't get an ATI. I've personally never had a problem with any of the ATI cards I've used, and I've played all of those games, exept RTCW. No problems whatsoever. The only game I've EVER had a problem with on an ATI card is Tribes 2, and the catalyst drivers fixed the problem.
The point is that the drivers are getting better every release. With any luck, they will pull up to the front with nVidia.
And how exactly do you know the card is unfinished? Do you have some key contacts inside ATI? I doubt it.
Posted by: SKYHN
No I dont have key contacts in ATI, but when people like Derek Smart and other developers come out and tell people about the card, they listen. Immagine if Carmack told people the real deal on the R300, ATI would crap their pants.
Its gotten to the point now where ATI has to patch their drivers and Developers are bashing them.

I think you forgot to mention a reliable source when you typed that last post...

I gave a name, how much more do you need than that?
Oh, maybe this: http://www.beyond3d.com/forum/viewt...er=asc&start=20

What I see in that link is 1 developer that doesn't like ATI's drivers.
Not that I know the names of many developers, but I never heard of him either.
If Carmack can make people crap their pants by telling people the real deal on the R300, then I'm sure he would've done so a long time ago, unless there is no real problem...

I think this is going to become a pissing contest, for sure.
I'll just say this. Go with whatever YOU like. Do the research and make YOUR choice. Don't let others make YOUR decisions for you.

It already is one, if you haven't noticed.

It's not a full blown contest yet.. Noone's really said, mine is better than yours.. But it's getting that way.

Well I won't be the one to say that, I don't have an ATI card anymore

Ok, You want to see it sweat?
Install this and run it at 1024x768 16 or 32.
Posted by: Chako
Thanks for the neat screen saver.
Yes. That made my Geforce 3 bust a gut, but then, I think it would make the fastest cards do the same.
Posted by: taco_fox
Not to beat the dead horse or anything, but some people say that ATi's drivers produce better quality 3D than nVidia's. Of course, some people say that about the Parhelia as well.. so take that however you want.
You still want to stress the GF3? Like I said, crank up the AA and play UT2003 at 1600x1200x32. I'd like to see how that turns out.

THAT SCREENSAVER LOOKS AWESOME..
Specially at 1600x1200. That rocks.. Where'd you find that Memn? Hehe Excellent find there alright.
And as for my GF4 Ti-4400 It didn't choke on that at all. Nice and smooooooth.
Only one problem... Whenever I disable the display mode change, and run it in 1024x768x32 nothing moves, but the Electric! Thing fades in and out, but the animation doesn't move in the least.. am I doin` something wrong?
