connection problems with my router

Hey, I had NTL broadband installed at my house and i called their tech support to help me connect it all up, and in the end i had to use a USB to connect to the modem instead of ethernet I dont know why exactly, all the lady said was that my ethernet wasnt registering, or that certain specifications werent showing up where they were suppost to be.
The thing is I had been connected to a network using ethernet so i dunno why its suddenly stopped being there.
Next i bought a router to start a new network in my house. set it all up and when i turned on my Laptop it ddint connect, so i just clicked around under my netwok settings and under properties i checked the TCP/IP box (cos it wasnt ticked) and after hitting ok it connected so things were ok. After that i went and connected the other PCs in the house to the network. No problems there.
However the next day when i turned on my Laptop, it wouldnt connect, i had alook at the properties of my network settings and the TCP/IP is still checked and it also says its connected. My laptop is being silly. The internet and router are working fine cos the other computers in the house work fine.
Does anyone know what i can do to get my ethernet connection working again?

BTW, this was posted by my sister who is back home from uni for the weekend, so any help you can give will be very helpful

PS, she is running XP Home, just in case you needed to know.

Well, I don't know too much about networking, but I do know this, make sure all of your connections are nice and tights, and make sure all the comps are registering on the network. If one computer can't see the others, there is a problem somewhere. Read the routers manuals, it should explain more in detail. If you still can't find the problem, or the solution. Try doing a google search on home networking.

I'm sorry I couldn't be more of assistance, but I did what I could.
